I agree that it's for comedic effect. We see Cologne looking beautiful and expect that young Happosai would be a *total* stud...err, not so much
It would be interesting to see what he truly did look like, though. Who knows? D">

I've noticed that the shrinking thing is only exaggerated when it's for comedic effect. For example, in Inu-Yasha, a fairly serious (for the most part) series, you see old people like Kagome's grandfather or Kaede as not exaggerated.

He is just a midget perv. Since everyone shrinks when they get old, when they get very old, poor Ranma & Akane, Poor Godai & Kyoko, Poor Arturo & Lum, hmm ,Lum's an alien perhaps she won't shrink? Poor InuYasha & Kagome, Hmm IY is a half demon maybe he'll just half shrink??

Bearing in mind that I can't recall if there is a note saying
"the truth" or words to that effect next to the depiction
of superdeformed young Happosai and that I cannot be
bothered to check right now, there is the possibility
that said depiction is how the listeners depicted him as
they couldn't imagine him being normal-looking and -sized.
(Didn't they have trouble imagining Cologne that way too,
except that they had somebody known to share some of her
genes...

When people get old, their bones shrivel, so their bodies get smaller. Takahashi greatly exaggerates this when she draws most of her old people... but since Happosai has ALWAYS been that short, even when young... then I guess that's just how he is. Seriously, now, considering the way Happosai acts, it's hard to imagine him as ever being studly.

I LOVE Haposai! Yes, he is a dirty old pervert...but its FUNNY! And he is a really cute old man (For some reason I find old people really cute). I find him to be really lovable! Besides, whats a few missing panties? Its worth it for the laughs.

I know really old people randomly shrink, even though they were tall and pretty as young adults. Apantly Haposai was just short his whole life. Is he a dwarf? Maybe.

Happosai, in every sense of the word, is a freak of nature. I say he is a troll, or a goblin or something.

But can't deny he knows his art. I just like to overlook that fact because he's such a peckerwood.

Ok I just thought of when I posted how much I didn't like happosai, but now I remember when we go back to ancient China, Cologne was young and healthy and gorgeous, and Happosai was this little stump running around and womanizing as usual. Cheating ppl, being obnoxious, etc.

In the manga and the anime, he is short and has the tiny black pig tail, but I wonder why they didn't ever show him, well, normal looking at a young age. We saw how he viewed HIMSELF as a gorgeous blonde guy but we...
