Just finished watching the first episode of the new drama adaptation of 1 Pound Gospel and I must say I have a lot of mixed feeling about it. The locations of
the story are awesome and they truly brought to life the different settings of the manga and if you do a careful comparison, the resemblance is impressive (the
gym especially took me by surprise). The actors played their part fairly according to the script; but that is just it.

I know if this was the American market, having a live adaptation would likely mean no animated version. Usually, you wouldn't be able to get two seperate
production companies to agree to adapt the same concept so close to each other, because the perceived market would be too small. Also if one did become
popular, the other would almost be sure to tank. But, that's not always true. There was a Sabrina the Teenage Witch prime-time sitcom and a Saturday
morning cartoon. Same for...

I wonder about that too, but really, I don't think there's too many people who are wanting an anime adaption, this late after the series started,
especially now that the series has already been adapted into television. Of course, I thought that Mermaids Forest wouldn't be animated again, but that
happened, but that was a different story.

I'm thinking having a Drama will reduce the chances of it being animated, unless the TV share was somewhat high.

And it...

I can't remember if we talked about it on the board or not, but Yoiko and I discussed it when the drama first started coming out. Do you think that having
the drama will HELP One Pound Gospel get a possible TV anime series? Or do you think that having the drama will make it very unlikely to have a TV anime?
Thoughts anyone?

Dumping Aunt Mizue was a shame. I really felt like she drove a lot of the plot towards the end of the manga by meddling and trying to get Angela
"defrocked" if that's the correct term. I suppose they had a more limited number of episodes to deal with that might have prevented them from
introducing that angle into things though.

I share your frustration with the lack of inclusion of so many of Kosaku's opponents. If I had to venture a guess, I think that the producers chose
KAT-TUN guy, Kazuya Kamenashi to play Kosaku in hopes of getting some attention for the show based on him being in it. Unfortunately he isn't much of a
boxer and it almost seems as if they've written around this fact, deliberately playing down the in ring action where so many of Gospels chapter's take
place.

Yeah, I, too, am confused as to why these Doramas can't find any foreign actors! I recently watched the dorama for Nodame Cantabile, and any
"European" characters with more than a few lines was clearly a Japanese person with a bad wig!

....Although, I guess most foreigners who were persuing an acting career wouldn't be in Japan in the first place....

Well, in regard to Mukoda and her love story and her kid, while they do stray from the original story, they seem to make the story more suitable for a TV
drama....her kid's bully troubles and the little love between Mukoda and that guy add more story lines into the mix, captivating the audience. Without
them, it's just the progression of the love between Angel and Kosuke.....which is good and all, but maybe not enough for dorama watchers.

I'm in agreement with ya'all as well. Angela's family added so much to the storyline, I'm saddened that they would just remove them altogether.
I was excited about the possability of seeing them portrayed in live-action. How many changes can they make before we can't call it OPG anymore? The
basic storyline is there and the main characters, but the supporting cast all seems to be pulled out of thin air....

I definitely agree with what you're saying. Of all of Takahashi's manga that could be adapted into a live action series, I think OPG is a natural (and
easy) fit. Therefore, why the producers decided to make the changes they did is really confusing to me. I have to say I don't have any qualms with the
casting (even changing up Takos for "Tiger"....I mean, it probably is pretty hard to find a Mexican actor who can speak Japanese IN Japan). But the
liberties they take...
