Getting away from Rei, and her Dad too probably. It seems to me Lum was probably ready for a little independance. It seems Takahashi succeeded with her concept of making the 'alien girl' be a recurring character when she got to 'Ranma 1/2.' It seemed to me when reading Ranma that Shampoo ended up doing what Takahashi had originally intended for Lum in the first place.

Though I wonder how Takahashi would have structured the series if Shinobu had stayed on as the main female character.
