Heaven Hell in Japanese culture SPOILERS

From reading other posts, I see that some people haven't read the most recent mangas, so I put a spoiler advisory in my title.

Anyways, I was just wondering with all of the recent talk about Kikyo going to heaven or hell, where Naraku will end up and where Inuyasha's meidou leads,
what is the japanese concept of the afterlife? In japan, shinotoism and buddism are prevalent, right? I just thought heaven and hell were part of other western
religions.

Let me know if I'm way off...

As we've seen in the most recent chapter, Kagome is in a black empty expanse apparently inhabited solely by her and the Shikon no Tama. So what is it: the
afterlife or some kind of Tama-created dimension?

Also, thank you everyone for your explanation of the afterlife and 'hell' in Japan; it's really interesting!

So, I guess the question is, what kind of hell is Kagome in, and can Inuyasha get there, or can she get out of there herself? Does anyone have any idea which
hell Myoga was referring to, when he described the meidou zangetsuha as a method of despatching your enemy straight to hell? Of course, you can't know if
it would apply to this situation the same way, anyway, but it might.

In Japan there are some aferlife worlds and the hell is one of them, I have a book illustrated by Shigeru Mizuki, a famous yokai manga creator. According to
him, Japanese afterlife worlds are,

tokoyonokuni
nenokuni
yominokuni
takamagahra
hell
fudarakujoudo
amidanojoudo

Japamese image of hell is based on "Ojoyoshu" written by Genshin.
