But Rumiko-sensei was being ambiguous about that. I guess she wanted us to deduce by ourselves the true nature of Asuna. OR Rumiko herself might have thought that we would feel it's unfair for Mitaka IF she let him be tricked by Asuna, so she twitched the plot a bit so that a whole favor was still...

Yes, the setup was quite lame, I agree with you. But RT didn't do that just to hurt Mitaka; she wanted us to see the detrimental effects of arranged marriage, as in another story - "The Laughing Target" (Rumic Theater) - RT also showed us another tragedy originated from this rustic tradition.

Here's one of my friends' thoughts :

I think it was definitely a set-up. Asuna is such a dog person, I swear. Since Mitaka's pup and her pup mated, she believed that she and Mitaka were meant to be together as well. Not saying she didn't already love Mitaka before that incident, but that just gave her extra incentive to be more aggressive. That's why she let that situation play itself out to the fullest, and didn't stop it once it got out of hand.

After reviewing the manga chapters in question, it is difficult to conclude that the wedding was any time other than late March or early April. The cherry trees are in full bloom. I'll be interested if Yusaku has an alternative explanation.

First of, it's a really interesting theory that I never thought about. Asuna is the heiress of a powerful daibatsu, so she was certainly highly trained in subtle diplomatic arts and is conceivably capable of carrying it off. If so, I pity Mitaka if she ever turns those skills against him. (Well, in effect she already did if the theory is true.)

My friend who just finished MI thinks that Asuna, although she seemed to deny it, may actually have slept with Mitaka the night that she encountered him drunk at his apartment. My friend's point was that Asuna was already so far along pregnant by Godai and Kyoko's wedding. I guess I'd have to consult the timetable as to whether that was possible. If we take into account Asuna's retort to her mother that she didn't know one could get pregnant from kissing, that would seem to be the ultimate...

I think Asuna is a natural judge of human character. I still am amazed at her astute response when she realized she was 2nd-place in Mitaka's heart. (When they were visiting his childhood bedroom.) Instead of some emotional scene, she cracked a bad joke, which was perhaps the most potent thing she could have done to get Mitaka to notice her. And it seems to have worked.
