Hmm, best thing. Being able to streamline the story, they kept a good pace throughout and could focus on the important stories, without some of the meandering or slowly-paced parts that, although interesting, do little for the main story. Also, they could incorporate the loon squad into the story more without altering something else later on. I like that since it was done at the end of the series, there was almost no filler; almost all the stories were from the manga. We get to see the ending properly animated.

Worst changes? Nitpicky stuff. Sometimes the pacing is too fast, and we don't get to see some of the more subtle transformations characters go through. Some of the most interesting stories are side-stories that don't get animated. Likewise, we get less of some of the minor/supporting characters and Nikaido gets dropped. They lose track of the season's after the story about Soichiro's Xmas present. Some of the story revisions make the story move faster but are less interesting.

All in all, though, it was a really good effort. I don't think there'd be any real reason to want to go back and do it again, the anime got it right the first time. Too bad Takahashi's later series didn't fare like this one did. One a side not, favourite unanimated story: the one where Godai spends all night going through the Otonashi's photo collections, trying to find a picture of Soichiro without waking the others up, only to find Kyoko as all of them back at the apartment.
