IIRC, he's supposed to be like the "perfect" husband or so, and since everyone has a different opinion as to how a perfect guy would look like, he's never shown.
WAAAHHH!! It's dark!! It's cramped!! I'm scared!! |

It's interesting that we all don't know how Soichiro looked!
As an old adage goes: "We fear what we don't know". Godai and Mitaka are not only competing with each other BUT ALSO competing with the *mysterious* Soichiro, who represented the ideal of Kyoko's heart. IF they both knew exactly how Soichiro was, they would feel secure and fearless on the path to her heart. But since Soichiro remained a mystery AND a memory, his "shadow" was too overwhelming to overcome. Godai -- in order to win her heart -- must overcome both his own fear and his sense of inferiority to a MYSTERY; that's the hardest part to achieve, and he has proved that he could ! |

I've always liked that plot device. It works on a couple of levels:
First, we don't see Soichiro, so he remains an enigmatic figure for the readers. That means that we don't have as much of a connection to him as we do to Godai and, to a lesser extent, Mitaka. He is a part of Kyoko's past whom she loved but we, as readers, are able to get behind Godai much more easily without the emotional connection to Soichiro. While we may feel bad for Kyoko for becoming a widow so young, we have an emotional connection to her, not her late husband. Secondly, of course, he is a mystery to Godai. He has someone to live up to whom he doesn't even know. Soichiro will always be on a high pedistal which Godai has to try to surpass. It's really intimidating and adds alot to his development. |

Yusaku Godai gives us a very good and thoughtful expressions about this issue.
http//www.furinkan.com/features/ I agree with him. I have never been read or watched Maison Ikkoku to this day for some reason, so maybe I don't have the right to join this discussion. But I think I can understand what Takahashi meant by concealing Soichiro's face or appearance. |

I don't know why but I always thought just because of the outline of his hairstyle I kept visualizing Perm from UY looking like Soichiro. But
realistically, like ryogasgirl said, RT prolly didn't show the face so we don't keep comparing him visually to Godai. Maybe he was really truly good
looking, maybe he was a....dog 3 3 lol. It's sort of fun to leave it up to our imaginations. Still can't get the freckle faced Perm image outta my
head tho

Judging by what we can see of his face in different outlines and the photo from the yearbook, I'd guess Soichiro looked a lot like his father, except with
big round glasses instead of big square ones (and no mustache). I figured he looks like Dr. Shiina from Mermaid's Saga (when he's young in the
flashback).
