Sesshomaru is he a bad guy or a good guy? |
Lead | |
|
He seemed bad at the beginning and acts all tough but is he really full of hatred? He reminds me of Raymond's brother on Everybody loves Raymond. Instand
it would be Everybody loves Inuyasha.

Despite his rather unexpressive countenance, Sesshoumaru is a complex character. He was a rather coldhearted killer for decades (at least-we don't know how
old he is exactly) and he had no qualms about massacring humans. However, he saved Rin on numerous occassions, and let her tag along. He found love in his
heart for that little girl and his steely exterior kind of melted away after that. Not completely, of course. It's not like he's picking roses and
skipping around humming showtunes. The main change we see in him is that he lays off Inuyasha in favor of the evil Naraku. We also see him accepting that
Tetsuseiga will never be his. Although, he still doesn't shy away from killing anyone who gets in his way.
I guess my point is that he's not a bad guy, but he's no angel. SPOILERS (Highlight to read): In more recent chapters of the manga, he went so far as to protect Miroku and Sango, humans he had no real attatchment to, endangering his own life. This is when he receives Bakuseiga, a symbol of the change in him. Although, he did attack Naraku with obvious disconcern for the lives of the villagers. Again, a dual personality. Hmmmm, could he be bipolar?....well, probably not. |

Okay, you're talking about Sesshomaru, so I gotta put my two=cents in. Sesshomaru is not as pathetic as Raymond's brother. The best way I have heard
him described is as a prince, who is learning to care about the people. He is becoming worthy to rule as demon-dog supreme. Ultimately, he's a good guy.
If he wasn't, he would have killed InuYasha long ago.
I guess he's just been rather grumpy about the inherited swords. Rin has had a wonderful effect on him, and he's been growing more and more compassionate. Of all the characters, his is ,clearly, the most dynamic |

Yeah, but he'll never come out and admit anything, of course, at least not to Inuyasha. He's the Mendo/Mitaka-like figure who seems like the
upper-crust antagonist at first but eventually becomes part of the good guys.

I'd never call him a "good guy". He just sort of has his own agenda. He's ruthless to be sure, so I guess for me he'd still fall into
the "bad guy" category. But like Tierum said, he's a complex character. Which is what makes him interesting.

Spoilers in black:
My head is full of examples of both his ruthlessness and his mercy. Okay, so I can't argue that he has his own agenda, but you have to admit that he's lightened up in recent chapters. I don't know, seeing him fight alongside the Inu gang and seeing his concern for Rin throughout the series just makes it difficult for me to put him in the 'bad guy' category. Though, I guess I can't really see him fitting into the 'good guy' category either. He really does have his own best interest at heart: the main reason he goes after Naraku is because he tried to use him to get at Inuyasha - and no one uses the great daiyoukai Sesshoumaru |

I don't know. It seems to me like, until the most recent chapter, Sesshomaru has really shown
that he has expanded beyond selfish motivation. However, it would be really cool if, in the end, when everyone might praise him for his nobility and kindness,
if he would then reveal that his efforts were selfishly motivated after all, especially if it accompanies a secretive look. It would leave us guessing, as
usual.

How do you think Rin will turn out then?

She seems pretty oblivious, oddly enough. Sesshomaru and Jaken don't seem to rub off on her, just the opposite in fact. I think she's been a positive
influence on them.

I think she just seems oblivious because she's young; but I agree that she's rubbing off on them more than they are on her. Perhaps when she gets
older, she'll become more aware and then the relationship between her and Sesshoumaru would change a bit. (No, not like that - I don't think he'd
ever make a move on her.) I can see them still being companions as she gets older; I think they'll always have a father-daughter relationship. Maybe
she'll even marry a youkai. You never know. --Wow, can you imagine her bringing someone home to meet Sesshoumaru?

I kinda feel like Sesshomaru will leave her with Miroku, Sango, and Kohaku. She couldn't do better, for a family. Kaede could be like a grandma!

That's so beautiful a thought.

Hmm, I suppose I can see him doing that. He has grown to trust the Inu gang and she certainly seems to like them as well. He seems to only want the best for
her and he must understand the value of her having a family. I just wonder if she's too attatched to the daiyoukai. She's followed him around like a
puppy dog for so long, I think she might be torn if she had to choose between the two. Of course, even of she was upset for a little while, she seems to
rebound well, so I think she'd accept it. Hmmm, Kohaku as a big brother. How sweet!

Sesshy definitely goes under the good guy category. I know it's hard to see that, especially without knowing him for long, but he's just a badass who
hates to admit he's nice. It's kind of like being a principal. Principals always have to act tough and demeaning, but in reality, they care for their
students very much. Ok, so maybe that's not the best comparison but you get what I'm trying to say.
Yeah, so let's not talk about how he behaved before, but how he is at the present. Just can't call him the bad guy for any reason at all. About Rin, I guess it would be nice for her to stay with Kaede. And Sesshomaru can drop by once in a while to check up on her. It's not like he has to go far away forever or something. |

I have to agree that Sesshoumaru is a difficult character to figure out. Sometimes he's viscious and coldhearted, at other times, he demonstrates immense
compassion.
What I've never been able to figure out is why Sesshoumaru decided to save Rin in the first place. I suppose the kindness Rin gave him in offering him food when he was injured made him feel compassion towards her, but still, as he said himself, he dislikes ningen - always has. He even dislikes his brother because he's a hanyou. He never once held back because a ningen had begged for their life, then he revived this girl and let her follow him around. When they first met under that tree, I never suspected that she would have become such an important part of his life, and I guess he didn't either. |

Maybe it was bccuz he was repaying her for the food and saving him?
Or perhaps it was TRUE that he was just tenting Tensaiga's power, though I doubt it. He seems to have a heart, deep down, or something close to a heart. |

Whoa! Rin has never saved Sesshomaru, to my knowledge! And, he refused her offerings of food, I believe. But, of course, that doesn't mean that he
wasn't moved. Clearly, he found her efforts charming, in some way.

well, she didn't really save him, but she died for him, I think she died when she was catching him food.

Actually, she died while running away from some of Kouga's wolves who were attacking her village. She probably would have died whether Sesshoumaru was
there or not, since she lived in teh village and they slaughtered everyone-or almost everyone-in the village. So I don't really think it's accurate to
say she died for him. He may have felt something for her since she continued to try to help him, even though her gestures were unnecessary since he is a youkai
and could heal well enough without any aid.
While she didn't die while catching him food, he did seem to be touched - or at the very least intruiged - when she was beaten for trying to catch fish for him. Though, come to think of it, she didn't talk at that point, so he didn't really know the whole story behind her bruised face. Okay, random thought as I'm posting this. He refuses all of Rin's offerings, saying he doesn't eat human food. So what does he eat? We never see him noshing and he never seems to get hungry, though he must eat something.
