Hey all! I would love some opinions on something I've been thinking about recently (I don't know why). I don't know if this is just in my area,
but whenever I go to a Barnes & Noble or a Borders, there is sure to be somebody hanging out by the manga section reading manga. I don't mean just
skimming through a book to see if it looks interesting - I mean sitting down with the book and reading it from cover to cover, then putting it back on the
shelf. I'm sure this happens with other books as well, but I think that the fact most mangas tend to be relatively short and easy to read quickly make it
more feasible to read it all in one short sitting. I admit I'm not crazy about this - I feel like if you want to read a manga (or any book for that matter)
without paying for it you should go to your library, not your bookstore. However, it's also true that many bookstores encourage people to hang out and read
books, with big chairs and whatnot. On a related note, whenever I go to my local Japanese bookstore (which has a huge selection of English-translated manga -
LOVE IT!) the manga are all wrapped in individual platic wrap, presumably to keep people from doing reading the whole thing in the store; I also remember this
from when I visited Japan several years ago. For me, personally, this isn't a problem since there are only two series that I'm currently interested in
buying and I know I like them both. However, if I was interested in getting into new series the plastic wrap would be a serious problem, since why on earth
would I buy a book without getting a feel for it and seeing if it looks like it would interest me?
So what do you lovely people think? Is it okay to read a manga (or any book) in a retail environment with no intention of purchasing it, or is that going too
far? And would American companies be justified in wrapping manga in plastic wrap like in Japan to prevent people from doing that, or would they be
going too far? Please discuss - I'm curious to know what others think about this ![]()
