I just finished my translation of Takahashi's 2001 short story "Oyaji Grafitti" aka "Grafitti Pop". You can check that out here. We got our copy of Shiowase List the other day from Hoshi (thanks again, Hoshi!), so
that translation will probably be my next project.

Well we didn't do the newest short story this time, but we've got some older stories already translated and that enabled me to encode one pretty fast.
After doing all seinen stories for the past year or so, I thought it'd be nice get get a shonen story. Takahashi's only uncollected shonen story in
fact! with CAT!
Shuta and Miya sort of have a Ranma/Akane type relationship, so for fans of Ranma, I recommend it. Enjoy! Translation of with CAT. |

Unfortunately, "with CAT" is a little tricky and probably won't be collected anytime soon. Most of Takahashi's short stories now are from the
magazine "Big Comic Original", and she puts those out at once a year. So all the Big Comic Original stories are collected into a book because
they're "seinen" rather than "shonen". Since Takahashi doesn't write short stories for Shonen Sunday anymore (or hasn't written
one since 1999 at any rate, which was "with CAT"), there isn't enough "shonen" content to fill a short story collection.
So, unfortunately, it could be awhile. |

Hmm, an abused wife? That seems kinda dark, even for the creator of Inuyasha. "Graffiti Pop" wasn't exactly melancholy, but it did deal with some
more serious subject matter.
Rumiko's writing style does seem to have progressed in a rather dark, certainly less upbeat direction from UY. Perhaps that's becoming more how she sees the world; perhaps she just thinks darker stories are more interesting. What say you? |

I suppose I can't blame her for wanting to branch out a bit now that she's been at it for so long, though it's not eactly like she's never done
anything dark before. Mermaid Saga and Laughing Target which come to mind first are both rather dark stories. Although she's really known for her comedies,
such as Urusei Yatsura and Ranma 1/2, her body of works are more varied than these magnum opi.

I think Takahashi is basically horror story teller because UY is a story of legendary monsters oni invading the earth, and Ranma 1/2 is about terribly scary
curses turning your body into something else. She successfully changes these horror stories into comedies, while preserving their motif. Therefore, it might
not be difficult for her to create horror stories like Mermaid Saga, however different it may appear than her earlier works.
