Why the final chapter movie is so ugly? |
Lead | |

After long days downloading this movie from bitorrent, I feel a bit disappointed because the graphics so ugly, poor. I cant understand, after making 96
amazingly nice eps, they made such a thing like that. However, I like the way Ibuki talks to Kyoko that she will not give up and in one day will make an affair
with Godai

I havent seen the movie but it probably had something to do with budget. |

I don't think the movie's ugly, but Godai weirded me out a bit. He looked so dark, hardened, and serious,

I can actually answer this question for you. Here's a sample from an old Ex.org interview with the MI character designer, Yuji Moriyama.

For my part, I think the movie was well done. The character designs did not bother me. Akemi, for instance, seemed so human in the movie. I know perhaps a
bit less kawaii, but there was an increased earthiness that matched the person well. Godai looking a bit more serious actually lent greater respect for the
person, in my opinion.
All in all, what is done is done, and I have no problem with it. Had the movie turned out more like the TV series, I certainly would have loved it. But I felt there was a statement made in the movie that was not shown in the anime series. I would not criticize the director for his choices, whether influenced by another anime or not.

I appreciated the more realistic character designs in the movie. I think it added to the overall seriousness of the tone and atmosphere. Since there was a
time lapse in the anime, you didn't really get to see how Godai and Kyoko's relationship evolved or changed during that year. With Ibuki returning and
one final relationship 'scare' before the big day, I thought it felt appropriate for the different looks.
It's looking slim on the chances of an official US release of the final movie, but perhaps Viz could do a special combo with the live-action drama. |

it's another matter that disappointed me more, instead of the character designs that yes is not so suitable:
the missed chance to depict the parts of the manga (the most important ones, of course) that were not included in the anime version. They tried to do something like that, like the (unnecessary in my opinion) appearance of Nikaido or, most of all, Kyoko's admission about her feelings for Godai when she talks with Yagami. But for me something still lack. |

I guess in the big scheme of things, I see the movie as an appendix. It is completely unnecessary for the enjoyment of the series. The way it was done was
fine by my opinion, but it really didn't add much to the story. We got to see (almost) everyone one last time (plus Nikaido, who really didn't add TOO
much). I think I found the parts featuring Akemi and Master to be most interesting. It was a fine movie, but nothing spectacular.
I think it would have been very nice to feature some memories of parts that could not have been shown in the TV series (like the love making scene). In that I agree wholeheartedly with Frappo. One could have had almost the same movie, but add various flashbacks including these special moments from the manga (moments that otherwise could not have been featured in the TV series due to their more mature (but not H) content). But hindsight is 20/20. As it turned out, I guess I really can't complain.

Yoiko asks:
Other than the sex scene, what are some of the other things you would like ot have seen added?Good question. You know, when I wrote this I pondered that. I don't think that there is any other part that comes to mind that would otherwise have not been suitable for TV (yet OK for the movie). However, I still think there could have been other manga parts left out of the anime series that could have been featured. For instance, in the ending credits, when we see Mrs. Ichinose bopping Kentaro over a homework assignment, that is a moment from the manga not featured in the anime. It had to do with when Godai helped Kentaro form sentences with "do it". It was a hilarious manga chapter, but not included in the anime. That could be an example of the types of things not included in the anime brought out in the manga. I'm not saying it would be first on my list. Another chapter I thought was missing was the princess and the pauper play. The contrast of where Godai was during that chapter and where he was just before his wedding could have been brought out. Just a couple examples; I'm sure there's more. As for any more M content, I'm still drawing a blank. But the lovemaking scene is a special one and its a shame we couldn't have had that featured in some way. It would have provided, without having to bring back Yagami for one last time at bat, a much more satisfying way to feature Kyoko having declared her love for Godai. But, alas, no real complaint. Just bears mentioning.

With all the 'stuff' that comes from a series (comic, anime, OAV's, video games, movies, promo stuff, etc...), it's too much for just one
artist to take on. Sometimes you pick an artist that would do better on another project; it happens.

Yeah, it happens. One can always be the critic. I try to avoid that myself. But, I have to agree with Frappo that there are things that COULD have been done. But que sara sara!

The Konatsu Oguchi stuff could have been added. Well, I don't know if it would have worked in the context of the film, but that was something that was left
out, if I remember correctly.

Not only that Hokkaido trip, the freshman party, when Godai and the drunk girl are in front of a love hotel and nearly come in, and Kyoko comes by and being
jealous, should have been added. And the first kiss scene, 'the princess and the pauper' play. The love hotel scene could be ignored, but the morning
right after that when Kyoko tells Godai she's in love with him for a long time really need to be added.
