What do you think and why do you think so?
My good friend just finished Maison Ikkoku and he thought maybe Asuna actually set Mitaka up, possibly in a passive agressive sort of way. I'm thinking if he thinks that, then he thinks she's the ultimate Yagami, only more demure as a proper lady of position should be. I'm thinking the classical Japanese woman here, whose schemes and plans are never apparent, and who appears always with demure grace and poise on the outside. I have to say that I don't know if I had considered this, but it seemed plausible that Asuna could have filled that profile.
All I have to say is that if Asuna DID scheme to win Mitaka, she did it masterfully, but with good will in her heart. She certainly seemed sincere that she would have called off the engagement at one point. But that too could have been the ultimate lure into the trap. It certainly worked out that way. But if it was a scheme, she got more than what she may have bargained for. Two babies at first and one more on the way right away.
Anyway, interested in folks responses.
