The weirdest part of the film was where Lum and Ataru were experiencing those strange illusions inside the orb.
i201.photobucket.com/albu...1184791254 i201.photobucket.com/albu...1184791274 This is one of the illusions they experienced. In each illusion, they manage to find each other. |

This is my favorite movie. I think the whole scene with the red ribons plays out somthing like this: Lum and Ataru are in the dark, there is a red ribon on Lums finger, she flows it to Ataru, he has other ribons on his finger, he trys to pull them off so Lum wont see, she looks at his hand, and see's all the other girls his fate is tied with....
somthing like that (I could be remembering wrong, but I that seems right) |

It was a great movie... it's one of my favorites.
As w/ the string, recall Shinobu's telling of the folklore: true lovers are bound together by a red string contected via "left pinkie". Chibi interjects saying he heard that true lovers were bound at the toes. Shinobu's answer was that it varied per region in Japan. I think it was important to specify the connection point, especially the "left pinkie" because Lum and Ataru are BOTH bound at the left pinkie ('Tis fate'). I don't know if Ataru was trying to pull off the other strings on his right hand (I'd like to believe he was trying to), but he REALLY didn't want Lum to see. They are destined to be together... this is another validation of that. The other strings are just excess baggage (or rather obsticles). It appears that Ataru has one string per finger; Who are the other 5 that Ataru is "bound" to? |

Quote: Those were definitely weird, and I still don't entirely understand them (though I do have theories), but I don't think they were necessarily illusions. It's pretty open to interpretation, I guess, and while I still don't know for certain what that could have been, my take on it is that Ataru and Lum kept getting reincarnated and always finding each other in each new life... like, no matter what happens, they're always destined to be together. I dunno, that's just my take on it. ![]() |

Thats how I thought of it too.

Another possibility is that it's a symbolic dream sequence intended to show how Lum and Ataru will always be together.

And besides, why would they have Lum actually transform into a big, fat apatosaurus when they had previously made an episode in which Lum was afraid that she was turning into a cow? There didn't appear to be any real physical transformation occuring during the scene.

Okay, so what exactly was going on with the scene with the fairies, dinosaurs, and seagulls? Was it supposed to be a dream sequence? I'm assuming Ataru the
Jekyll meant "transformed" when he said "reincarnated", but I didn't notice any indication of a physical transformation. The way the
images of the fairy, dinosaur, and seagull materialize over Lum at the beginning of each scenario suggest that it is either: A. a dream sequence or B. an
illusion (muchlike the wolves in Wolf's Rain)

When I said reincarnated, I actually meant the opposite. I didn't mean to say they transformed, nor did I really mean to say that they were reincarnated
into those creatures. Actually, what I was thinking more along the lines of is that they, themselves, are reincarnations, and all those other forms were past
lives. As in, no matter how far the passage of time, those two souls will always find each other.

I now understand what you meant. Thanks for clearing it up. It makes sense.

I saw the movie last night, and what went through my mind durring the fairy, bird and dinosaur sequence was "how hard is it to find an idiot". I dont
think ataru is an idiot, but he stands out.
As for the red srting thing I think it was a hard way of telling ataru, that you cant avoid lum.a sort of fact that she will be there and you will need her.
