A few people have asked to see pictures of while I'm here in Japan, so I thought I'd just start my own topic! I'll just start posting everything here now instead of derailing other threads!

Oh I still really wanted to see you're house in Japan (or apartment, or wherever you were).
Oh, and anything strange, trippy, and out of the ordinary that you happen to see. I love weird Japanese stuff! |

Teaching English in Japan
|
Hoshi,
How is your teaching going? Do you have any advice for someone who is wondering what it will be like... I have a friend who will be going to Japan soon to teach English, probably this spring. Thanks, Urasue |

It's going pretty good! It's not really a hard job. haha (Not that I'm saying teaching isn't hard, just that my particular position at this
particular school is not belabored with many responsibilities. lol) Is your friend coming as part of Interac? I know that their teaching situations are much
different from JETs, which is what I am. Do they know where in Japan they will be heading? That can factor into what type of teaching they do as well.
It's gotten so cold here, it's actually been snowing the past few days! My first time seeing real snow!! I gotta get with it on uploading photos! |

It may be Interac, I don't think it's JET; whatever it is wasn't her first choice but she flew to SF for an interview and was accepted so she took
it. She's waiting to hear where she's going. She will be teaching at night she said - so maybe not only kids. She's a little worried about her
ability to speak Japanese, read signs and get on the right train, do laundry, her inability to eat seafood (at least she's not allergic to rice !) ... but
I have a feeling she'll meet many people who speak English. Anyway I hope you are staying warm & please do post some photos !

I have a few friends here who work for Interac. They don't make quite as much money or get treated quite as well as JETs do (that's not to say that
they're treated badly!) but they get more time off during the week that JETs do, so she'll have a lot of time to travel around if she's got the
money to do so! She'll probably pick up basic stuff fairly quickly, but there is usually some nice person that will help you if you're having trouble.
I know a decent amount of Japanese and I still had a real fun time trying to talk to the gas company on the phone last night when mine was mysteriously shut
off for some reason. (In the middle of my shower, thank you!!) Once she gets the hang of the trains, she'll be set. Actually, this site: http://www.hyperdia.com/cgi-english/hyperWeb.cgi is great for figuring out the train schedules. The
seafood thing might be a bit of a struggle, is it that she doesn't like it, or is she allergic to it? Because a lot of times they will use seafood
products in things that you wouldn't think they would. Fish stock and such. She might need to be careful about that sort of thing if it's a medical
issue.

urasue wrote:I have to say this was the absolute hardest thing about Japan for me. I hate, hate, hate seafood and so my dining options were somewhat limited to instant noodles, McDonalds and various Chinese and Italian restaurants. I actually wound up losing 50 pounds my first semester there and got down to a pretty gaunt looking 120 lbs. Needless to say my folks were really pissed with me when I came home for Christmas. The portion sizes are somewhat small, but for me the most noticable difference was not getting free refills. I'm one of those guys that sucks down five or six glasses of Coke when I go out to eat, so having to make due with one for dinner wasn't so fun. There is a restaurant called "Gusto" though that has free refills, so that's a good tip. Another tip is Shakey's Pizza. They have a one price pizza buffet that's all you can eat. Of course the pizzas in Japan are about as thick as a cracker, but if you're hungry and want to stretch your yen, it'll do. |

Hoshi & Yoiko, thanks for all the useful info !
She is allergic to seafood and now I know she has a good reason to be worried - if seafood sneaks into all sorts of food. However if she loses weight over there she'll be happy, because she has to wear dress pants to work which she normally does not wear. (That's such a girl thing, huh... yay I'm losing weight). She won't be eating pizza either unless they are cheese-less because she can't eat dairy products. ( ! ) She definitely wants to travel around to see Nara and Kyoto - well, as much of the country as she can see. She wants to continue to study Japanese so it seems like any extra time might allow for that. I met this friend in a Continuing Ed. Japanese class, we both took the 2 sessions that are offered. Several of the students are planning to try to teach in Japan. I just want to visit Japan eventually. |

I took TESOL (teaching English to speakers of otehr languages) classes in college, but I just taught a few Spanish speakers some English. I would love to look
into going to Japan to teach, though. That would be so coolies.

What is that, squid or something?
Cool pic of Fuji, so you gunna climb it or what |

Mmmmmm. Yummy yummy squid. :D

I bet with the right spices and sauce, and fried just right, it would be exceptionally yummy.
Thanks for finding that! So have you tried anything like that yet? If only one could convey the scents and smells and aromas one encounters. I bet that could fill a page or two.
