I've seen 2D and 3D images of Maison Ikkoku itself. I wonder if anyone's come across maps of Ikkokuland? I know Tower Hill is modelled after a certain burough of Tokyo but I wondered if anyone has ever put the main sights of Ikkokuland, from Ikkokukan itself, to Chachamaru, to Ueno Station, to the bathhouse, to the park with the swingset, to the Tennis Club, and to all those kinds of places on a map. Has anyone seen one? It would be interesting if one could deduce from the manga and anime some sort of map. But it would probably require a working knowledge of the geography of a section of Tokyo that Tower Hill is based off of.

Hey that's a funny thought, I never really thought about a map. When I read the comic, I always felt like I had a sense of the area (after a few books
anyway), kind of like you'd feel if you sporadically opened your eyes while in the back of a car driving through the same neighborhood again and again. If
I randomly, magically (I suppose), got dropped there, I think I could figure it out - but exactly how far away everything is I'm not sure. I wonder if the
panels where people walk places follow an actual map - the base of the hill, for example, is where that booze cart is located, right? Where Mr. Otonashi and
Yusaku go drinking after the stop off at the tennis court... I'd guess you'd have a lot to speculate on if you really had the time to comb through all
that...

I think this is probably what you're looking for. You can click it for a much larger view. This black and white image is from the Maison Ikkoku Art Collection book, but the original image in color is in one of the Sound Theater drama CDs that I'm currently collecting. I don't have this one yet though. Please don't spread the image around though, I'd appreciate it! |

Hi 16OzGospel, great name, welcome to the board.
To answer your questions: The book, strangely enough, doesn't have an ISBN number. In fact it has no identifying information within it whatsoever, which leads me to believe it was originally packaged with something else (perhaps one of the old computer games). Rather than checking Amazon though, I recommend looking on ebay every week or so. My brother bought the book for me (after years of searching) last Christmas by finding it on ebay, and I've seen at least one or two pop up there in the last year. I have the cover and some general information about the artbook up at the bottom of this page. Let me know if there are any other questions I can answer for you in regards to it, I'd be happy to help in any way I can. As far as the Drama CD images go..... I just don't know yet. We discussed trying to buy 'em all up, but no one else really wanted to invest in them. They're really expensive AND hard to find so I don't know if I want to spend hundreds of bucks and then scan 'em all in and give them away on the internet. But I do really like the maps, so it might be hard to resist sharing them. |

Tokeizaka is based on city of Higashikurume and many fan site has photos of places in that city pertaining to MI: here, here, here, here (with map), and here (with map). You can use Google Earth to get a sense of the layout of the setting. A
particular scene in chapter 10, Godai moping along a river after getting fired, is very faithful to a real place in the city (here, here, and here). Payphone Godai used in chapter 15 is still there (here, here and here), on the other hand, the street corner shown later in the same chapter used to be there but now its unrecognizable. The city has indeed changed very much in 20 years,
model for Chachamaru and the bathhouse has closed, various flower shop, fruit shop, pastry shop etc. that appeared in background are gone as well. The park
with swingset was still there in '94, but it
look pretty run-down then so who knows if it's still there today after more than decade has passed since.
