I view Genma somewhat neutrally. While he is the one responsible for his and Ranma's curses, he did manage to keep Ranma alive and mostly unharmed for the duration of their voyage. Taking Ranma away from his mother for so long is definitely bad, but he did it for what could ultimately be considered a noble cause. Genma's views of society are a bit twisted, but they could be much, much worse than they are. Happosai clearly had an effect on the way he sees the world. He's generally a decent guy, but he's always looking out for #1. The worst thing he's done, by far, is preventing Ranma from meeting his mother, but even here, you could argue he was doing it to protect his son. I guess the closest comparison to Genma as a father would by Mr. Fujinami from UY, but at least Genma didn't try to change Ranma's gender identity for the sake of the Art, even after Ranma got cursed.

Genma's been more of an instructor to Ranma, but considering their lifestyle during their training voyage, you could certainly do much worse than to have Genma for a father. Given the circumstances, he was a fine parent. But had the trip not taken place while he still tried to teach Ranma everything he did, I think Nodoka would have called the Japanese equivalent of Social Services.

Though Genma's behavior was often abhorrent at best, he generally acted in Ranma's best interests as a parent and gave his son a fair amount of personal freedom. But the way he did this was so awful that this is often ignored. For instance, he should have told Ranma about Ukyo's gender and interest in marrying him, but he did ultimately leave the choice to his son. That was the right thing to do, even if he never explained the consequences of his decisions until the past had already caught up to them. If there is anything Genma should be derided for, it is this regular inability to withhold important information from Ranma that would have at the very least permitted the boy to make a reasonably well-nuanced decision. He was ultimately an okay parent, but his parenting style left much to be desired.
