...is it any good, or should I go for Mushishi or cult classic Message From Space (Uchu Kara no Message)
instead?

Are we talking 1986 live action movie or 2007 TV movie? Because the answer is very different depending on which one it is. haha

My answer would be the same either way. Both the 86 movie & the 07 drama are cheezy, and they look cheap. The only difference is in the movie we got a special bonus musical number. Besides, how can you go wrong with an old cult classic? |

2007.
I intend to lobby for expanded horizon for a convention this fall, by getting them to replace some of the late night dorama with other, older, live action, in particular anime-/manga-based ones. (What is popularly known as fogey series as "only old fogies" like myself are interested.) Two or three should be enough. I've already got Lupin III: Strange Psychokinetic Strategy Sukeban Deka the movie Gegege no Kitaro (2007, unsubbed) Yokai Monsters: 100 monsters

The 2007 one is fairly close to the manga, and the casting is very good in my opinion, plus you've got Misaki Ito as Kyoko, so you can't go wrong. Try
to get 'em to show it!

I agree. I was impressed by the casting for the 07 version and the actor for Godai is so adorable and as dorky as the animated character! I honestly think the
acting can be a teensy bit better tho, seemed a bit dry and feelingless in the beginning

I didn't think the casting was all that good. Ichinose was too young and thin, Yotsuya seemed too old, the woman playing Akemi wasn't anything like
her, and both Kyoko and Godai were way too beautiful. I did like how cramped they made Ikkoku look, but it was too clean and it looked brand new. One thing I
liked about the movie was how everything looked old, used & dirty. I think the casting looked closer to the manga. They were certainly a lot more average
looking. And, again, Special Bonus Musical Number!

Q: just how many episodes are there in the 2007 LA ?
I've watched the first one and here's my opinions: - the actress who played Kyoko did a bad job : I don't like the way she held the broom while dithering her body (the way you hold a broom can tell quite a bit about yourself, you know); not only she looked *nothing* like Kyoko (not nearly as beautiful), her expression of emotions was cheesy + too sharp (or should I say "fierce"?), she totally lacked gentleness. - the one who played Godai in 07 version didn't look as character-like as 1986 "Godai", but his acting was good. - only Godai grandma was perfect! LOL
