Awhile ago i was reading the translations of the Urusei Yatsura Manga on Project ILM but the site doesn't seem to be working anymore. Does anyone know
anywhere else i can find them or if the site will be back up? I'm rather upset that i had the chance to finish the manga but didn't... figures. Any
help would be great.

I think the people in charge here took them down. For a variety of reasons I believe. But they're out there, roaming around on the internet.
Personally I've found them avaliable to download at all the usual sites. >.> you know, it's synonymous with a "heavy downpour" But we don't talk about that here, heh.

The reason they were taken down is because the guy that was paying for the hosting disappeared. But yeah, other places are distributing our work now, so it's out there... |

Could you please tell me where I can get Urusei Yatsura scanlations? I used Google to search "Urusei Yatsura" but I didn't get anywhere. I also
searched scanlation collections but could not find one which has it. It would be very helpful if jopojelly, or anyone else, could post the location(s) here in
a safe yet tangibly way. Perhaps through some kind of easy riddle or code or something (I don't know what is synonymous with heavy downpour, storm? rain?
oh man the withdrawal symptoms are killing me). Man, I'm dying to read that stuff again, I can hardly stand it! Thanks a lot.

Urusei Yatsura is one of the funniest things I've ever read. Please let me know where because I've had no luck finding scanlations of it since Project
ILM went down. I can't stand not being able to track the adventures of Lum, Ataru and the gang.

One thing I was wondering (glad to have discovered this forum) is how much of the original manga did VIZ eventually cover in their English editions. What book
of the Japanese tankoubon would I begin collecting so as to not have overlap between the two?
Edit: Doh! Not only was this not exactly the best place to post this quesiton, but a little poking around indicates that I could collect the original Japanese editions, around book 12 in tankoubon format is the spot. Thanks for finally telling people how much Viz got through before they gave up. I have all their English output in my collection. Don't think I will ever be able to complete the anime from Animeigo any time soon...

Welcome aboard Mr. Shoujo! Glad you found what you were looking for. Also, Viz skipped three chapters that they didn't collect. We translated them with
Project ILM (which is unfortunately down), but you should be able to find it with a little looking, apparently some others are hosting our work now.

The first site I could find was called OneManga, and sure enough, they have scans. I don't know if the webmasters will let me recommend it, since it also
has scans of other manga, so that's why I won't link it. But it should be easy enough to Google it.

I had a realization over the weekend, that a decade ago from February, I first rented UY Movie 2, and how UY was my introduction to the world of anime/manga. Kind of sad that after all this time, VIZ still won't even release the remaining chapters. |

Viz seem to hate Urusei Yatsura, even if they praise everything else Takahashi has done. They exclude Urusei Yatsura from almost everything they do or mention
(if you see their ads for Takahashi stuff, they have characters representing Maison Ikkoku, Ranma ½, and Inu-Yasha, but no UY rep). The only time they DO
mention UY anymore is in those little biographies for Rumiko Takahashi, but that's only because it's unavoidable (since, ya know, UY was her
claim to fame).
Times are different now and I'm sure UY would sell much better than back when anime and manga were still rather obscure, but Viz seems to have become rather stubborn about this, unfortunately.

I don't think Viz HATES UY, I think it's just not marketable here. They did try to release an English version at one point, something most companies
shied away from, despite sales in the Orient, because it's such a beast to translate it in a way that makes it relevant to Westerners. Age is another
factor. The series looks & feels like it came from the 1970s/80s. It's a hard sale in competition against something new like Naruto or Fruits
Basket. The series isn't hard to find scanlated if you really want to read it, and considering how many people just steal their comics online anyway,
it's probably best left the way it is.

I'm hopeful that if a series like Dr. Slump does well, they'll give it another chance. If only they'd hung in with it a LITTLE longer her art
style would have become the more familiar "Ranma 1/2" style that everyone likes, and the pun heavy stories would have changed into her more
well-known humor style.

I dunno, I really don't think UY would catch on among the current anime/manga crowd. I'm a massive UY fan, as anyone who's been on this board for
longer than the lifespan of a heavy subatomic particle can tell you, but over the past decade the animation scene in Japan, and hence the anime scene in the
English-speaking world, has been taken over by its own fans, who only want more of the same repackaged, uh, "leavings," leaving the rest of us who
are interested in flexible, fun, genre-defying storytelling high and dry. I'm sorry to say this on a manga and anime board, but I think unless the industry
is reclaimed from otaku, we won't have anything to show the rest of our friends that won't make us embarassed.
UY, with its edgy surrealism and anarchic characters, presages the cartoons on Adult Swim by over a decade, but most of the offerings from Japanese pop culture that make it to average American eyes and ears are essentially glorified fan service. Maybe it's because all my friends and I are incurable culture junkies, but I feel that for something to truly be interesting, it has to be a little hard to swallow - and UY knows when to provide a dose of bitter medicine. |

Amen to that. The problems with bringing UY to the states officially like people seem to want, is that it simply isn't relevant anymore. It's obviously a 70s/80s story, not to mention that it's entirely oriented to Japanese culture (you really have to understand that culture to understand half the things going on in UY). Now, I'm a huge UY fan. But I can acknowledge the simple fact that in order for UY to gain popularity, it would have to be redone and oriented towards a modern audience (even in Japan). Considering the Otaku perception of things from the past (great to remember, but once it's done it should never be touched on again), it wouldn't happen. But I think that if the manga industry were to ever remake an old manga the way Hollywood so often remakes old movies, and the music industry recycles songs by having the new bands cover the old music, and even the video game industry is picking up on remaking old properties, UY would be the first logical candidate for remaking. It's got so many things that would qualify popularity going for it, but it's not so popular that there's such a huge fanbase that would be outraged by a remake (unlike say... Dragon Ball or anything like that), and it's old enough that a fresh take on it wouldn't be so outrageous. Remaking UY could be like how they made the new Battlestar Galactica series. And I think it would get the same reactions. |

UY is definitely my favorite Takahashi series, but I wouldn't support a remake. There are just too damn many of those on our side of the Pacific, at least,
and it just kinda cheapens the original. I say leave it as it is, but demand that Viz bring back the manga, and let the series stand as a lesser-known gem for
all those willing to fugeddabout the age and artwork, and just kinda accept it on its own terms. Seek and ye shall find...

I remain somewhat optimistic on Viz's chances of releasing UY. They've been good about republishing Takahashi's other works (Mermaid and Gospel)
recently, which was encouraging.
But mainly I remain hopeful because of some of the old series Viz has decided to release recently like "Dr. Slump", "Oishinbo", and "Golgo 13", all of which are over 20 years old. |

Well, on the Rumic World front page, there is a petition you can sign and have emailed to Viz itself. If they're publishing Dr. Slump, perhaps they might
be sold again on UY. (Isn't the Lupin manga still around too? That series is even older.)
