Any disappointments with the series? |
Lead | |

There's still at least a few chapters left to go before IY wraps up, so I can't touch the ending, but I wondered if any of you guys had a
disappointment within the series, like a character's arrival/departure, a story point that you didn't think was executed well, etc. I had a couple,
but I'd like to hear what you guys think, so I'll go with I was hoping to see more of Naraku as shapeshifter. Early on, it seemed like it was
important that Naraku could take different forms, yet all we ever saw him as was either in the baboon's skin or as the young lord. I was hoping maybe when
he went beneath Mt. Hakurei that we'd see a different design (like maybe female this time, or bald, or something), but he just looked like he was wearing a
butterfly costume.

I've only read what VIZ has released so far, and loved all of it, but I'm about 20 volumes behind Japan so there's a lot of content that could potentially be disappointing. I'm so excited to start reading the volumes that go past the point the anime ended at. Sorry for asking this but if anyone has anything to say about the series after that point could they please censor it with spoiler bars? Thanks! |

Well, my Good Sir or Lady, Naraku has taken quite a hideous form in the latest chapter and it RULES.
As for disappointments, eh... cliffhangers? But that's good writing in my opinion. I cheered and pounded my desk every damn time one of Naraku's minions died. Moryomaru. Kagura. Hakudoushi. Byakuya. The baby. Kanna. No matter how attached to any of them I was, I was SO AMPED when they died. Each death a step closer to killing Naraku. Seriously, the whole reason I started reading this manga was because of how badly I wanted to see Naraku die and see how things wrap up afterwards. Though, I wish Sesshomaru and Kagura....... dotdotdot |

I've been pleased overall with the series, though of all of Takahashi's works it's probably the one I feel least connected with. That's not
saying I dislike it, it's a very good series, but I grew up reading her romantic comedies, so that's what I think I'll always like the most.
It's funny that you mention the shape-changing, because when I first read that he had disguised himself as a woman to curse Miroku's grandfather, I assumed that ability would be a major plot element. It's not something I was disappointed about, but it does seem like it was unusual that that wasn't explored further. On some level I think the implication was that it takes a long time for him to transform (hence hiding his face under the baboon pelt since he was in the process of assuming Kagewaki's appearance). --SPOILERS-- But personally, I was disappointed with the many storylines that dealt with Inuyasha's weapon upgrading. I thought that went on too long, especially with the Dragon-Scaled Tetsusaiga, which really seemed to have little impact in the long run. I thought Moryomaru was kept around a little too long too. Having said that though, because this isn't an episodic series like Ranma or Urusei Yatsura, you really have to sit down and read it in chunks. I remember a few years ago when we were first putting the site together I read back through the whole series and it flowed so much better when it was read that way, rather than piece by piece each week. So I look forward to tackling it again as a whole. |

I agree that some of the arcs were a bit lengthy. I wouldn't call it a disappointment but I do wish there were more romantic moments between Inuyasha and
kagome and less moments with Inuyasha holding on to his past with Kikyo. Of course, there are tons of little moments I'd like alter to suit my likes, but
I'm pretty much satisfied with the series the way it is.

I can't really say I dislike anything about the series,
Spoiler (I think): though I also wish that Kagura could have survived. Well, about the shape-changing thing, I think that once the Shikon no Tama returned with Kagome, he began to use other people rather than doing things himself - therefore no longer needing to change shape to fool people into thinking he was someone else. Naraku did get his hands into the work himself occassionally, but more often than not, it was a demon puppet or some such thing. He really tried to distance himself from the dirty work Spoiler: Until now, of course. Now that he has the complete Shikon no Tama and no more minions, he's got to do things himself. Accurate observation? |

SPOILERS
Yeah, I definitely think Inuyasha suffers from some "third act problems". Specifically beginning around volume 38 when the more charismatic and personable villains (Kagura and Hakudoshi) are replaced with The Infant and Moryomaru. I think Takahashi probably outdid herself when she created the Band of Seven, and so the badguys she made next sort of paled by comparison. I'd say after volume 38 the series entered into a bit of a lull overall. The Yoketsu storyline was a bit of a mess in my mind, and never had much payoff. Plus, at six chapters its too long. (Yakurodokusen is also basically the same character). So Moryomaru isn't resolved until volume 45, and I'd have to say that chunk of the series, 39-45 is probably the weakest (uninteresting villain in Moryomaru, constant Tetsusaiga powerups in the Dragon scaled Tetsusaiga and the yoketsu stuff). Thats not to say that it was all bad during this "era" I liked the little wolf demon, Kai, I've got a real soft spot for Kinka and Ginka, and I thought the demonic cat nun storyline was a nice throwback to the early days of Inuyasha. And after Moryomaru bites the dust, Takahashi is back on form with really good stories, resolutions for Koga, Kikyo, Kanna, Sesshomaru's Mother's introduction, along with meaningful powerups that make sense like the Meido Zangetsuha, and then you've got things back on track! Good topic! You know you love a series when you're able to discuss its faults objectively. I'm giving this some kudos. |

especially with the Dragon-Scaled Tetsusaiga, which really seemed to have little impact in the long run.SPOILERS You know, I kept hoping that something would happen with that. Inuyasha spends so much time during the series upgrading Tetsuseiga and only a few attacks really make a big impact on the overall story. I always keep that thin ray of hope that some of the dead ends will reappear like Meioju's shell which seemed to be destroyed - over and done with - then reappeared as part of Naraku's armor later in the series. Yeah, some things Takahashi brings in seem as though she wanted them to be a bigger part of the series and then she decided to go a different way. I felt the same when she brought Jaken into this final battle. He was so determined to be by Sesshoumaru's side. I thought "Well, maybe he'll make a contribution to Naraku's end." But almost as soon as he's reintroduced into the storyline, Sessy tells him to leave and Jaken is all to happy to obey. I guess you could say he was just there for comic relief. So I guess there were a few dead ends which were kinda frustrating now that I think about it.... |

***SPOILERS***
Remember when Kikyo joined forces with Midoriko's soul? And remember how nothing really came of that except Koga's legs freezing up once in a while? It was quite a let down considering how important Midoriko is in the history of the Shikon Jewel. I expected Midoriko's influence would be a larger plot element. Joining the chorus on the Dragon-Scaled Tessaiga. I actually thought it was a really cool attack, but once Inuyasha mastered it he never used the damn thing except in one or two battles with Moryomaru. It made that incredibly long storyline seem like more of a waste of time than it already did. |

you know, sometimes i wished that the series surrounded more on kagome increasing her powers rather than inu improving his blade. it came as a disappointment
when kagome's powers were supposedly increased when magatsuhi died but nothing really spectacular came out of that. so, it felt like kagome is the
weakest of all her friends.

Well, I guess I just can't fault the girl for not making Naraku blow up as soon as she received her powers. She just got them, so she's not wiz yet.
She did purify shouki witghout even thinking about it and saw where the Shikon no tama was, rending Naraku's arm from his body and really turning the
battle their way. Yeah, throughout the series, Kagome has always been behind Kikyo in strength, but somehow I feel as though Kagome will give us a big show of
her powers before the series is over. It's that big turnaround in the end that Takahashi was really going for in this main character. She certainly has
made a big leap from average schoolgirl to youkai killer. She may have lagged behind the other main characters for most of the series, but she's made some
big contributions.
BTW Welcome to teh board! |
