Son of a... why does a thread as interesting as this one have to be a victim of the Ezpocalypse? I'm reviving this thread. Let's give this a second go
around, Maison Ikkoku board.

Yeah, I'll repost my opening remarks here to get the ball rolling again.
Something I've noticed is how popular Kyoko is among people who have read Maison Ikkoku. The overwhelming majority of the fans of MI that I know are male, and one of the things they often say they like the most about Kyoko is her 'strength'. |

For my part, I'll only just say, yeah! This topic is worth another go-around. Any comments anyone? Late now I'll come back to this. Hopefully
others will officially "re-kick off" this topic.

I brely qualify to answer this, because I've only read the first two English volumes of Ranma. 1/2
In Maison Ikkoku, when Godai is his most sincere (siding with Kyoko against her parents, Mitaka and the others pressuring her into remarrying; describing his ideal woman to the Chigusas, etc.) it is also when Kyoko is most appreciative of him. In Ranma 1/2, at least as far as I've read, every time Ranma is just about to realize that his second opinion (their first opinion, before Akane found out about the curse and started calling him a pervert, was to be quite chummy) of her is wrong something always happens to spoil the mood. The first such time was when he was complimenting how her new hairdo, which he was responsible for ruining, looked. He's just about to realize that she really *does* look good, when she shoves him in the water. Do *I* have a problem with that? No, she's much younger than Kyoko, so not as mature, and if they *had* gotten along, it would have been a pretty boring 35 books to look forward to. |

16ozGospel makes some good points.
I'd say from the manga especially, Akane has a motherly instinct that shows itself concerning Ranma, even as Kyoko has these on Godai's behalf. Comparing Akane to Kyoko, Akane could view Ranma as a friend, even as Kyoko is able to rely on Godai throughout the series. I think Ranma on the other hand is not half as sincere as Godai. If you ask me, Akane is to be commended for her patience with Ranma. I know that folks may like to pick on Akane. She's not the classic beauty that Kyoko is. But she really IS cute, and kind, I might add, and Ranma knows it. There's just this stubbornness, I'd say, attributable to his upbringing by Genma and his martial arts background, that forbids him from saying so. And that, I think, if it weren't for his insecurity about having both the girl and guy side to him may have allowed for him to fully admit that. I think somehow he holds a grudge against Akane, having felt betrayed by her for turning on him only for finding out that he IS a boy after all. I think many of us (I admit my first time through the anime especially, I held the same grudge against Akane) see many of Akane's faults through his eyes and magnify them, so that it takes a bit for us to truly like her. It's Akane's growth as a person that will allow for Ranma to grow too. And we should all appreciate that.
