I came up with Ataru at second based on one of the early manga chapters. It's time for Mendo and Tobimaro's annual match, and Mendo's trying to recruit Ataru for his speed. After being reminded that women's "thighs shine brightly" in spring, Ataru tells him "I play a mean second base."

A personal admission is good enough for me!

I was actually thinking of putting Mendo at short because of his athletic ability and he seems to actually be decent friends with Ataru.

By the way, who's pitching? I figured Ton-chan would fit there. He seems to be depicted on the mound a lot.

I don't really think Lum would be a good outfielder. Yeah, she can fly, but she doesn't seem to move very quickly in the air. Too many balls would drop in the alleys even with her flying ability. Additionally, is it a good idea to have somebody who can leap 80 feet in the air playing outfield in today's steroid-crazed envioronment? Kind of like cheating I think. Plus, she have to take great pains to explain it without being exposed as an alien.

But I do think she should play. I'd put her at third to take advantage of her reflexes and her natural desire to keep an eye on her Darling. She's shown she can hit and has good foot speed.

How about putting Benten in center instead? She seems a bit more athletic than Lum and has luck on her side too.

I had originally compiled an All-Rumiko team, consisting of characters from all her manga. But my all-UY team (National League, so no DH) would look like this (number, position, and scouting report included):

#13 2B Ataru. Lightning speed. Good on DP. Decent contact hitter with periodic power. Somewhat patient at the plate. Sometimes muffs routine grounders. Very heady with immense potential. Indestructible.
#47 1B Mr. Invader. Great power hitter who can cover the whole strike zone. Surprisingly fast for size. Somewhat impatient hitter, but so big that few pitches are balls anyway.
#8 CF Benten. Very solid hitter with power to all fields. Good speed masks weak arm. Average defensive instincts. Impatient hitter and reckless baserunner. Good at adjusting to pitches mid-game. Loves a fight. Great in the clutch.
#22 RF Ryuunosuke. Tremendous arm and good range make up for bad glove. Makes consistent contact with line-drive power to pull. Needs to learn how to go to opposite field with a pitch. All-Star potential. Good instincts on the bases and will take a walk.
#17 3B Ton-chan. Devoted his life to the game. Outstanding speed and bazooka powered arm. Knows how to hit and unafraid to eat the ball.
#1 LF Shinobu. Probably more like a shortstop, but it's safer for her here. Good arm, but afraid of the ball. Has some power, but doesn't always connect.
#26 SS Mendo. Decent speed, but not blazing. Very agile with long strides and a powerful arm. Erratic with the glove. Solid power when he makes contact. Mediocre contact hitter who swings at anything. Poor defensive instincts and too aggressive on the bases. A favorite among female fans.
#4 C Cherry. Hideous face scares batters. Occasional power at the plate and very patient. Knows how to call a game. Weak arm, fast for a catcher.

Pitching:
#18 Lum. Probably has ability more like a middle infielder, but I can't resist saying that she has "electric" stuff. Probably throws in mid-90s complemented by a hard slider and a change.
#10 Ten (closer). High 90s heat with giddy-up. Still working on curve and has good changeup. Poor control. Often gets caught up in the moment and very immature. Nightmare with the glove.
#54 Kotatsuneko. Effectively spots mid-80s heater. Sinker is actually faster, reaching high 80s with strong break. Can literally pitch forever thanks to baffling knuckler and excellent control. Never perturbed on the mound, but deadly when angry.
#43 Mr. Fujinami. No longer a power guy, now relies on rising high-80s fastball and slider with solid movement. Very inconsistent stuff. Good pickoff move. Can pitch 3+ innings several days in a row or start in a pinch. Stubborn, can take a beating and wont change approach.

Managed by Onsen-Mark. Only person the team works together for because they all beat him up.
Sakura and Ran as coaches. Ryoko as entertainment director.
Oyuki is the only one who could handle this motley crew as an owner and GM. They don't want to make her angry, that's for sure.
Rei is the mascot. Too useless to do anything else for the team.

Rei the mascot wouldn't be much trouble. He'd probably shuttle back and forth during the game to act as some "eye candy" for the ladies. The team could make a buck off his massive appetite by having a "Feed the Mascot" deal every once in a while: something like "bring a rice ball/tayaki and get $20 off your ticket" or just one of those vending machines like they have at the zoo. For women, you could occasionally have an offer for them to have their picture taken with him as a human. Besides, I think his shapeshifting might scare the kids.

Also, I don't understand why not to use "Ataru" and "muff" in the same sentence. I know about the earmuffs, but is there something else?

In hockey, try this front line, assuming they can skate:

#8 C Lum: "Electric" ability and can truly "fly." Solid shot with laser-like accuracy. Can hit, but would rather play offense.
#26 L Mendo: A slasher, both agilitywise and defense wise. Prone to errors in stickhandling, but has a decent shot. Erratic accuracy and a poor passer.
#19 R Ryuunosuke: Hits like a freight train and has the hardest shot on the team. A true power forward with great instincts and can move. I guess kind of like a young Gordie Howe. Don't get her mad or your front teeth are goners.
#13 D Ataru: Think of a cross between Bobby Orr and Mario Lemieux, only more tenacious. Will do anything to win, and lightning fast. More of a center, but plays the blue line because the coach realized it would free him up to make plays on the entire ice. Can play the pivot in a pinch. Smarter than people give him credit.
#56 D Shinobu: another hard hitter, but seems to avoid contact when possible. Plays the puck well and a fine passer. Some skating problems.
#1 G Kotatsu-neko: Nothing passes this monster of a netminder, so why bother trying. Outstanding reflexes
Coach (Don) Cherry: Why not? It works as a hockey reference. Besides, his face is so ugly the squad will do whatever he wants just to avoid looking at it.

I suppose you have a point there. I wasn't familiar with the word being used in that manner, so I though of it as meaning "botch" or a similar word for screw up. All I meant was that his glove is a bit inconsistent.
