Additionally, I think something we could all be debating that has been overlooked thus far is the wish. If Kagome wishing to save herself from this nightmare world she's found herself in is a BAD wish, what would a good wish be? If that is deemed a selfish wish, would Inuyasha wishing to become human also be interpreted as selfish?Yeah, that's true, the wish is going to be an integral part of the ending of this story. I don't know if the 'goodness' of the wish is going to be as important as making the right wish. Wishing for world peace or some such thing may not be as effective as wishing for the Tama to be purified - though I don't think either one of these specific wishes is going to be made, you can see what I'm getting at....

Hmm . . . the jewels concern is self-preservation. If it was trying to absorb Kagome to replace a departed Midoriko, wouldn't it also need to replace
Magatsuhi? I had kind of thought Midoriko had left the jewel and tried to "take" Kikyo earlier on, and when she failed she didn't exist any more
(so the jewel would be unbalanced evil). The jewel itself might have left Magatsuhi go when it was completed with Naraku, but if it eventually needs both a
good and evil spirit I wonder if Naraku thought he could live forever inside the jewel.

I keep thinking about how the jewel didn't grant Naraku is real wish. Kagome has spoken about this herself, so I hope she chooses her wish carefully.
Imagine, if Kagome were to wish to be with Inuyasha, the jewel could grant that wish in a way that she wouldn't expect.
I'm also wondering if Inuyasha's ability to communicate to the modern era is a foreshadowing of where our pair will end up....which makes me think of the series ending....which is leading me to the nearest box of tissues...waaaaah *sobbing with great abandon*.

MANGA CHAP. 556 - FATE
OUR STORY: Chapter opens with Shippo standing watch at the spot where the Bone-Eater's Well used to be. Sango and Miroku come up to him and offer to take over the watch for a while so Shippo can get some rest. Shippo wonders aloud what happened to Inuyasha and Kagome. Miroku says he thought Naraku's destruction would fix everything, but their fate remains tied to the Shikon Jewel. Scene changes to a view of Kagome floating next to the Shikon Jewel in the darkness of the Meidou. The jewel tells her she doesn't belong in the Feudal Era, and she should go home to the world where she belongs. Kagome's face shows her emotional torment from the Jewel's words. As Kagome tearfully considers the possibility of wishing herself back home forever, the jewel reacts. Scene changes to a view of Inuyasha slaying the youkai within the Jewel. As the demons fall to Tessaiga, Inu calls out for Kagome. He doesn't see a group of youkai that have snuck around for an attack at his back. But someone else did. From out of nowhere a long-haired human woman clad in ancient Japanese battle armor appears, wielding a mighty sword. The woman, whose face isn't visible, slays the youkai sneaking up behind Inu and then disappears in a flash of light. A youkai says that was the miko that birthed the Shikon Jewel. Inu realizes it is speaking of Midoriko. The youkai says her battle with them has lasted for the hundreds of years since the Jewel was created and it is Kagome's fate to continue the battle from here on. The youkai points and Inu looks to see a spiderweb with a familiar face at its center - Naraku!!! Inu is in shock. Naraku's alive?!?! The youkai assures Inu that Naraku is dead right now, but will awaken when Kagome gives in to her fear of the lonely darkness, makes the selfish wish to return home and instead gets taken inside the Jewel. At that moment, the youkai says, Naraku will awaken and a new battle of souls will begin within the Jewel to continue the never-ending strife. The youkai says ever since Kagome carried the Jewel across the ages back to the Feudal Era, her fate was sealed. The youkai says she will become one with the jewel. It says the reason Kagome was born was to continue the battle within the Jewel. This statement infuriates Inuyasha. He slashes at the youkai with Tessaiga. It and the others fall back into the darkness. Inu shouts that the youkai are wrong about the reason Kagome was born. He thinks of how Kagome taught him how to smile, how to trust people. Because of Kagome, he thinks to himself, he has friends (there's a view of Shippo, Miroku and Sango standing vigil at the well's former site), learned to rely on others, have sympathy for others. He thinks of how Kagome taught him true strength and kindness. He knows in his heart Kagome was born so she could meet him. And he, too, for Kagome's sake. With all the power he can possibly put into his voice, Inu yells "Kagome, can you hear me?" Elsewhere, the jewel again asks Kagome to make her wish. When she doesn't respond, it says that she's choosing to remain alone in this darkness forever. Kagome's face shows her despair, her inner torment. She says Kikyou merely wanted to see Inuyasha one more time, and Naraku's last wish was probably for something even more modest. They didn't get what they wanted. She says the Jewel doesn't grant a person's real wish. If Kagome thinks that's the case, replies the Jewel, what will she do? Kagome thinks back to something her grandfather told her, that when the last person to hold the Jewel makes the right wish it will be purified and will disappear from this world. Kagome thinks for a moment and then realizes what the right wish must be. But this understanding brings her no joy. She doesn't know what will happen to her when she says it. Kagome's face shows her fear, uncertainty and doubt and the Jewel reacts. Kagome acknowledges she is frightened. Then Kagome hears a voice calling her: "Kagome, can you hear me? Kagome?" Her heart thumps, she recognizes the voice! It's Inuyasha!! She yells back his name. The Jewel reacts. THE END (^_*) |

The BIG event this chapter was Inu admitting to himself that Kagome was born to meet him and he was born to meet Kagome (NOT Kikyou). Finally, after 556
chapters, Inu admits Kagome is the only one meant for him. Okay, it's not the big kiss and he didn't use the word "love" although he did say
everything but. I see this as Inu's admission to himself that he's in love with Kagome and has been for a long time. As the fangirls say:
SQUEEEEEEEEEEEE!
So the youkai want Kagome and a reawakened Naraku to front for the good and evil sides of the Jewel going forward, replacing Midoriko and Magatsuhi. But Kagome has discovered the "right wish" that will end the Jewel's existence. I still can't discern what the right wish is, but it's apparent that Kagome fears it will jeopardize her own existence. I don't think, though, that Kagome would be wishing Kikyou had never died. That would negate the whole story. Further, indications in previous chapters point to Kagome surviving past the end of our tale. It's also apparent Kagome has figured out the Jewel is a con artist that doesn't grant what the person really wished for. But its chance of pulling off a con and tricking Kagome into a selfish wish evaporated when she heard Inu's voice. I think the right wish will be something that could destroy Kagome if she makes it by herself but will bring good for everyone if she makes it with Inuyasha. Another point of interest was how Miroku seemed resigned to being tied by fate to the Jewel. His disappointment that Naraku's death didn't fix things was keen. Also, RT's handling of Inu's and Kagome's facial expressions was just awesome. The expressions conveyed just what each was feeling. And Naraku looked so peaceful in death. We also got to see Midoriko again, coming briefly to Inu's assistance, but we still haven't seen her face. I wonder if RT is saving Midoriko's face for a big surprise. Next chapter should feature the reunion of Inu and Kagome, which should bring joy to IY fangirls and fanboys (like me). But I wonder how RT will get them both on the same side of the Jewel, inside or outside. (^_*) |

I also noticed the fact that Midoriko's face was downcast so you couldn't see it. I wonder if she will end up looking like Kagome and Kikyo -
confirming the reincarnation theory that's going around. I was also surprised to see Naraku in his human-like form. He looked so peaceful - though I guess
everyone looks peaceful when they're dead. |

I do think that at this point separating them wouldn't make much sense. How the characters would react aside (I simply don't think IY would be able to cope), I don't really know what his purpose would be without her. Yes he has friends that he cares for, but with Miroku and Sango getting married he'd be a bit of an awkward third wheel if he hung out with them. I don't think his relationship with Shippou is developed to be significant enough to figure in. And it looks like Sesshoumaru has already left (not that I think he'd figure into this decision). He has no home (well he does, where Kagome is, as he said) no close family, and no real position/duty in society. She is... sort of his life now that Naraku is dead (and the SnT presumably soon to be purified). Plus he was born for her. *squee* I'm thinking another possible ending is that Kagome does make a choice as to which era to stay in (foreshadowed in 494), but then in a twist- the well is somehow restored at the end and the two continue to have the ability to travel. I would prefer this to an ending where they end up together in the sengoku era (although I am all for them settling in the modern era first and foremost). What I'd like most is an ending where they choose to live in the modern era together, but are given a chance to say goodbye to their friends somehow. I do still want a human!InuYasha ending. I haven't given up hope yet! 
Anyway, enough rambling about the (scarily close!) ending- do you think she'll tie this up by 558 (the end of this volume) or do you think it will last a volume longer? I almost hope it lasts a volume longer to give opportune chances for a really resolved ending, although the anticipation each week is becoming difficult to cope with. Hah.

I expect RT with Inuyasha will follow the pattern she set in her romantic comedy Maison Ikkoku, and spend several chapters after the grand climax tying up the
affairs of all the major characters. She did that with MI, making for an excellent ending. Inuyasha's an action romance, so I'm expecting a great
ending that ties up all the major plot threads. (^_*)

Perhaps Kagome thinks the "right wish" is to wish for the Shikon Jewel to disappear. If the wish was granted then Kagome would be stranded in that
void forever. Okay, probably not, because it seems pretty obvious the jewel would never grant such a wish.
I don't expect to see much of Midoriko. If the jewel is destroyed, she disappears along with it. At any rate, I can't tell where Takahashi is going with this. That's a good thing, keeping me on my toes, as well as on the edge of my seat. |

She's such an important figure to the inception and presumably the purification of the Tama that I believe she must play a bigger role than showing up to wipe out a few youkai. One quick thought: with Midoriko being in the Shikon no Tama for hundreds of years doing the same thing and with her soul perhaps in pieces, such as part still in her body, part in Kikyo or Kags if they are indeed reincarnations, how coherant do you think she is? I kind of thought that it was odd that she showed up suddenly, killed a few youkai and left just as quickly without saying a word to Inuyasha. I thought she might want to say something to him - the youkai have certainly been vociferous enough. Someone theorized that the "right wish" could be simply Kagome asking Midoriko what she wants. It would make sense, given that wishing for anything for yourself has been outlined as the "wrong wish."That's interesting, haro. I imagine after all this time that Midoriko simply wants to end the battle within the Tama. Of course, if she left that would leave a goodness void which Kagome would presumably need to fill. Perhaps that is what she's worried about. I don't know though. Somehow I have teh feeling that this isn't quite it. Just doesn't feel right - yeah, I'm weird . Somehow I have the feeling that it won't be something
anyone inside the tama, ningen or youkai, wants. Although Midoriko does want the Tama to be purified....Could the Shikon no Tama refuse a wish, I wonder?

It looks like the end of the IY manga may be at hand.
A highly reliable Japanese spoiler source says there will be only 2 more manga chapters, and this information is sweeping through the IY Internet fan community like wildfire. Various site webmasters think this may be the real thing. It still could be a mistake or a deliberate hoax, but a number of normally cautious fanfolk think this may really be the end. The content of the Chap. 557 spoiler is quite plausible, however, so for what it's worth read on. Maybe our esteemed hosts here are hearing of this and have thoughts. Next week's chapter is entitled "Aitai" which is being translated as "I want to See You." Spoiler has Inuyasha warning Kagome not to wish for anything until he is by her side. Kagome hears this and takes heart. The youkai in the Jewel tell Inu his hopes are futile, that they let her hear his voice so she will wish to see him. Inu tries to warn her but the youkai tell him she can't hear him anymore. Kagome isn't scared anymore because she knows Inu will come for her just as he always has. The Jewel presses her, trying to trick her into wishing to see Inuyasha. She refuses to wish for anything. She believes Inu will come to her so she will just wait. Inuyasha has been frantically searching for Kagome in the jewel. He sees a small point of light before him and uses the Meidou Tessaiga on it. This act takes him to Kagome and they embrace. With Inu at her side, Kagome makes her wish - she wishes that the Jewel disappear forever. The Jewel shatters. Next time, the final chapter. MY THOUGHTS: I suppose it could be done in two chapters, particularly if these final chapters have extra pages. I think, if this is true, next week's Shonen Sunday will have a promo announcing the end of Inuyasha is at hand. Kagome and Inu destroying the Jewel might take up the first half of next week's chapter, then we may see Kagome in a series of scenes describing what happens to her and the rest of the characters. (These could be as flashbacks or just quick bits going forward.) THE END. The rumored denouement kinda makes sense. Kagome's shattering the Jewel in the living world launched the story. But if Kagome shatters the jewel within the Meidou, its fragments should fly all over the infinity of the Meidou. Since the Meidou itself is neither earth, heaven or hell, there'll be no beings to seek out its shards. The Jewel will have truly disappeared beyond recovery. I'm guessing the destruction of the jewel will be where the full extent of Kagome's miko powers get revealed. I'd much prefer seeing Miroku and Sango's wedding, seeing Sesshomaru and Inuyasha settling things between them, seeing what becomes of Rin and Kohaku and Shippo. And of course seeing Inu and Kagome finally be together forever. Yes, this all could be done within two chapters but I'd like to see it fleshed out a bit more. (^_*)

Yeah, I'd have thought there would be at least three more or so for everyone to say their goodbyes and wrap things up.
I would say perhaps Rumiko has gotten tired of the series and wants to make this quick...but that just sounds so callous. I'm just too relieved for the characters that their long, strange, trying trip is almost over. They all deserve peace after all this time. |

I ahve to agree that the spoiler looks plausible and that it is very likely that 558 will be the last chapter with a long chapter 558. I wouldn't go so far
as to say she seems tired of teh series and wants to end it quickly. HOW many chapters did it take for Naraku to die? I thought they'd be in that spider
ball forever. :P I do hope there's a kiss before this si all over.
 Like Ranma 1/2, kinda, I hope there's a wedding with Sango and Miroku at the
end. I don't know about amends between Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru - maybe just an unspoken truce. My question is, if the Tama gets destroyed and they're
floating in the meidou, how will they get home. I will also be disappointed if Kagome's powers aren't put to good use by the end of all this. If she
just makes a wish and they end up back in the Sengoku Jidai and everything's honkey dorey, it would feel empty to me.

lead the way, and he can slice a way out...somewhere. I'm going to guess that they end up in the feudal era first.
I just thought of something. Who needs a well if Inuyasha can create a meido, and Kagome can guide them through it to wherever they want to go? I bet that will become the way back to the modern era. What does everyone else think?
