MANGA CHAP. 558 - TOMORROW

OUR STORY: Chapter opens with a view of Rin and Kaede hurrying down a path, with Rin admonishing Kaede to hurry up because "it'll be born soon." Kaede asks where the father is, and Rin says he's out working. Kaede remarks that this is, after all, the third one. She thinks back on how it's been three years... They pass by the Bone-Eater's Well, restored to its usual place.

Scene changes to a manor house where Miroku is conducting a youkai exorcism. The lord of the manor grumbles about the price Miroku's charging, one bag of rice for one ofuda charm, which was tripled because it required three ofuda charms to force out the demon. The exorcism is successful and the youkai, a doglike creature, attempts to flee for its life. Miroku alerts Inuyasha, saying its coming his way. Inuyasha is ready, with Tessaiga drawn. He slays the youkai. As they leave for home, Inuyasha comments that Miroku grossly overcharged the lord and that he's being greedy. But Miroku shrugs off the criticism, saying the fair price is whatever you can get, and he has expenses to meet. Speaking of expenses, Inuyasha says it must be about time for Miroku's kid to be born. In the village, Kaede is cleaning the baby after the birth as Rin assists. The baby cries loudly at this indignity. Kaede pronounces this to be a healthy baby boy and takes him to his mother. Meanwhile Miroku learns his baby has been born and he hurries home to see his wife. He looks pleased. He enters his bedroom to see his wife Sango lying on her side, holding the baby. Next to her are the couple's twin girls, about 2 years old, dressed in little kimonos decorated with a butterfly design. They are looking at their new little brother. Sango looks pleased and proud as she invites Miroku to come hold their son.

Later that evening, we find them conversing in a typical married-couple pillow talk as they settle down for the night. Their three children are snuggled by Sango's left side as Miroku lies down at her right side. Sango wonders whatever happened to Kagome. Miroku recalls that it's been three years since the defeat of Naraku. He recalls how the Bone-Eater's Well vanished upon Naraku's death, and how it returned three days later in a pillar of light. He recalls how Inuyasha came out of the well all alone, still wearing his beads. Inu announced that Kagome is safe but provided no elaboration. Sango wonders if Kagome returned to that other world Inuyasha often spoke of. Miroku says Inuyasha hasn't said much about Kagome since then, but did mention once that Kagome had other people that loved her and needed her. Sango wonders if Inuyasha is lonely. We see Inuyasha standing all alone on a hillside, staring at the heavens.

Scene changes to the modern era, present day, in front of a high school building. An anonymous official voice congratulates the new graduates. Next panel, we see a group of celebrating high-school students outside the building. Among them are Kagome's modern-era friends Eri, Yuka and Ayumi. Eri sees Kagome and calls to her. We see Kagome dressed in a high-school skirt-and-blazer outfit (the same one she wore in the jewel-induced dream), standing by her mother and grandpa. She still has the same hairstyle she wore in the Feudal Era. Yuka greets Kagome's mom, who congratulates her on graduating. Kagome remarks that all three of her friends made it into college. Ayumi says she plans to become an interpreter while Yuka says she wants to become a media announcer. Eri comments that Yuka will have to be a super-high achiever to pull off that career choice.

Kagome thinks on how three years have passed since the day the well returned to the Higurashi shrine, three days after it vanished, and how she returned with Inuyasha. She recalls how overjoyed her mother, grandpa and brother were to see her again and how she ran to her mother's arms. She tells her mom Inuyasha saved her, and turns to thank Inuyasha. But before she can complete a sentence, there's a flare of light from the well, Inuyasha is pulled down into it and vanishes into its depths. She peers into the well, calling out his name, but he is gone. Since then, she thinks, the well hasn't connected with anything.

Scene shifts back to the Feudal Era where Inuyasha is sitting beside Kaede as she cleans herbs for use. He comments that back then he was relieved to just be able to send Kagome home. He recalls how her family cried at her return and how he ended up back at the village. He says that he's not the only person Kagome is important to, after all. Kaede asks when Inuyasha became so wise. Shippo interrupts their conversation, startling them by popping up out of nowhere in his big balloon form. Kaede comments that he must have done well in the latest Kitsune exam and he announces he made a significant advance in status, to upper senior 7th rank. Shippo then tattles that Inuyasha has been going to the well every three days for the longest time, and for that little tattle-tale, Inu boots him away into the treeline. Kaede marvels at Inu's tenacity, but thinks it has done him no good. She recalls how Kagome came with the Shikon Jewel and disappeared with it as well. Kaede thinks Kagome came to her time and place to vanquish the Shikon Jewel, and with that accomplished her purpose in Kaede's world is likely over. Meantime, Inuysha has walked away from Kaede and stands alone, looking up at the sky.

We return to the modern era, where Kagome stands by the Bone-Eater's Well, thinking that her feelings may be what's been keeping the well from connecting to the Feudal Era. She recalls how frightened and sad she was when the well disappeared and she was plunged into the darkness. But she didn't know she was in that darkness for three days and how frightened her family had been for her when the well vanished. She recalls how terrible she felt for causing them such worry and how happy she was to see them all again. And then the well took Inuyasha and closed, cutting them off from each other.

She ponders on how many times she's thought of Inuyasha since that day. She thinks of how she went to the Feudal Era and did what had to be done. And she thinks of how, with that purpose accomplished, the well closed down leaving her "forever in my ... THIS world, a world without Inuyasha." She's thinking that all she wants now is to be with Inuyasha. She stares into the well's depths, her face so terribly sad. Kagome's mom finds her in the shrine. She immediately senses her daughter's distress and goes down the ladder to Kagome's side, asking what's wrong. But she already has a good idea why Kagome is so unhappy and she is saddened because her daughter is miserable. But as they both stare down the well, something changes. Kagome can see sky at the bottom of the well! The connection is back!! She starts to tell her mother but mom already knows, and knows what this means.

In the Feudal Era, we see Inuyasha being bedeviled by Miroku's twin girls as he sits near where Sango and Miroku are hanging out the laundry. Sango is carrying her newborn in a baby backpack. The girls call Inu doggy and tug at his ears, much to Inu's annoyance. He asks Miroku to do something about this. Miroku tells the kids to stop but they ignore him. Sango apologizes on the kids' behalf. Shippo is seated close by and comments that Inu is just a toy.

Inuyasha catches a scent on the wind, a scent tantalizingly familiar. He gets up, sets the twin tots onto a protesting Shippo tells them to "go slay Shippo," and start off at a run. He knows this scent so well - Kagome's scent! He races to the Bone-Eater's Well. The scent is so strong now! He kneels down and extends his right hand down into the well. From the darkness another hand clasps his. He pulls up, bringing Kagome out of the well. She's wearing a light solid-color sweater, houndstooth-check miniskirt and loafers. They stand face to face. Inu clasps her hand tightly and she clasps his, like they never, ever want to let go. Kagome rests her left hand on Inu's shoulder. Their overwhelming joy at seeing each other again is so very obvious in every fiber of their being.

Kagome's eyes fill with tears as she apologizes to Inuyasha and asks if he was waiting for her. He says her name, takes her in his arms and holds her in a close embrace as she wraps her arms around him. He calls her an idiot, but in a loving fashion, and then asks what she's been up to. Before she can reply, Miroku, Sango, their children and Shippo come up to the well. Miroku's carrying the twins and Shippo. They'd followed after Inuyasha when he took off on them. Sango and Shippo happily call out to Kagome. She greets them and announces she's back for good.

In the modern era, Souta encounters one of his friends, who's out with his older brother. The brother says he heard Souta has a hottie sister and wonders if Souta would introduce him to her. Souta says his sister isn't available, she left home right after high school graduation to get married. Souta's friend thinks that was fast, while the brother wonders if Kagome was some kind of delinquent. Souta meets his grandpa at the steps to the Higurashi shrine and asks how grandpa's medical checkup went. The old man says the only thing that came up was his uric acid level was a bit high. Souta says good bye to the other boys and helps grandpa up the stairs.

Back in the Feudal Era, Kagome is spending her days getting caught up on what's been happening with her Feudal Era friends over the past three years. It's quite obvious what Miroku and Sango have been doing. Kagome learns that Shippo has been leaving the village frequently to train in the Kitsune arts. Sango's brother Kohaku has taken Kilala and gone into training to perfect himself as a demon slayer so he can help people plagued by youkai. We cut to Kohaku meeting up with old Totosai, who has made the boy a new weapon that looks like a larger and much nastier version of his old sickle-chain. Totosai says it's a bit heavier than what Kohaku had before. He then asks if Kohaku plans to go back and visit with his sister once in a while, but Kohaku says no, her house is "a bit cramped" right now. Kagome learns Myoga the flea is still around and is living with Totosai. And she was surprised to learn that Rin has been placed in Kaede's custody, presumably to learn village ways for whatever the future holds. She'd expected Rin would have stayed with Sesshomaru. As for Kagome herself, she's been in miko training with Kaede, learning how to prepare medicines and conduct purifications.

We see Inuyasha and Kagome in a field where she'd been picking herbs while they were discussing all these events. Kagome is dressed in the garb of a Feudal Era miko. A shadow falls on them from above. Kagome looks up to see Sesshomaru flying by on his way to the village He's accompanied as always by Jaken, who's clinging tightly to Sesshomaru's fluffy. Jaken spots Kagome and calls Sessho's attention to her. Kagome cheerfully calls out to Sessho, almost teasing as she calls him "brother-in-law." He hears her and gives her a very sour look in response. Kagome complains to Inu that Sessho "made a mean face" at her, but then realizes that Inu also bears a sour face. Inu comments that the whole exchange had a really unpleasant ring to it. We cut to the interior of Kaede's house, where Kaede asks Rin if Sesshomaru brought her something again. Rin replies that he gave her a new kimono. She seems pleased with it.

We next see Inuyasha running along, carrying Kagome on his back, heading for an unspecified destination. As they travel, Kagome thinks that there will be more changes in the future. She smiles as she thinks of days to come, living here in the Feudal Era along with Inuyasha, letting their days together grow. We see Inuyasha's face, also smiling. Inu comes to the place they were going to, a high hillside overlooking the whole valley and the village where their friends reside.. Kagome gets down and stands at Inuyasha's side. They gaze out over the valley, so much a couple, as Kagome thinks of how she and Inuyasha will always be together, "bound to tomorrow." SERIES ENDS (^_*)
