Kozue & Mitaka? (possible spoilers) |
Lead | |
|
I just bought Volume 5 and there's a short story where Kozue starts turning to Mitaka for relationship advice. As expected, the whole situation ends up
disintigrating into a bog of jealousy, but before that happened, in their first conversation, I was surprised by how sweet Mitaka was being towards Kozue.
Basically, for those who haven't read the book in a while, he tells her that he's sure Godai cares for her (really, that's probably true) and that
he's not seeing anybody at the time (also, technically true). He then goes on to say that the reason he hasn't done much with Kyoko is because he's
afraid of being rejected, and ends up telling her that he thinks Godai is just shy. As I was reading, I was wondering what Mitaka's motivations were during
this scene. Did he feel a bit big-brotherish and protective towards Kozue? Wanted to offer hope and comfort to somebody in a similar situation as himself?
Hoping to get Kozue so deeply attached to Godai that Kyoko would be free for the taking? All of the above? I would love to hear other's interpretations of
this scene
So honey...

I think Mitaka's actions are mostly moves in the Kyoko game. He's being half-truthful with Kozue, but he certainly says nothing to clue her in on
Godai's true feelings. He creates for Kozue a picture of Godai as the gun-shy suitor; to sure up the believability of this creation, he tells Kozue that he
himself is too scared to make his feelings obvious to Kyoko, which is a pretty blatant lie. He's already played his aggressive hand at this point, like in
the chapter where they go to the festival and he corners Kyoko in the field. However, he knows that if Kozue thinks a suave guy like him has trouble expressing
his feelings, she'll have another plausible explanation for why Godai isn't very effusive with her, besides the correct one.
I don't know if Mitaka really has any insight into how Godai feels, and I don't think he really cares. He just wants to keep Godai and Kozue together, and he doesn't seem to feel bad about telling half-truths to accomplish that. I think his defense is that he thinks as highly of Godai as Godai does of him - they both seem to think the other one is basically worthless. By the end of the chapter Mitaka's pretty sick of Kozue; he gets the results he wants with her, but she bugs him quite a bit in the process. I'm not sure he ever views Kozue as much more than a curiosity, a possible helping hand in his quest to get Godai out of the picture, but also a frustrating one. |

Kozue may be a sweet girl, but perceptive she's not! So honey...

Kozue may be a sweet girl, but perceptive she's not!*nods in agreement* Actually, on Kozue, I'd say vapid MAY describe her, but I get more of a sense of tunnel vision and singlemindedness. She's a good soul, and I am sure that Mitaka's comforts impress her and make her feel a whole lot better. I do tend to feel sorry for her about this point of the story due to the neglect she's feeling from Godai. And Mitaka has one thing right. Godai IS somewhat shy. It's just too bad that Godai's shy is covering up his intention to DUMP Kozue. Poor Kozue. I don't have a whole lot I could add to this. I think Lumsdarling hit the nail on the head with his description of Mitaka's methods and motives. It all boils down to the chess calculus of the suave and debonair Mitaka-san (could Cary Grant have been cast to play him?). Not that this is all bad. Also, I have to hand it to Mitaka on one thing. He treats Kozue well even after he no longer has use of her. Chalk that up to his upbringing and his habitual need to show himself a gentleman. CH, is this your first time reading the manga?

Kozue is too good and too trusting. She believes Mitaka and it doesn't occur to her that he's using her. Of course, she really doesn't have much
reason to disbelieve him, I just wish she wouldn't take him at face value. Yeah, he's a gentleman, but that doesn't forgive his lies....Yeah, Kozue
was getting a bit annoying, but, hey, Mitaka deserved it

CH, is this your first time reading the manga?Oh no! I've actually read the entire series, as I could get the books from the library. However, lately I've been buying the books and trying to read the series more in order. I haven't, however, seen much of the anime. That's a whole 'nother bucket of fish So honey...

As a guy, I always assumed that Mitaka did it because guy's don't really want to mess up other guy's relationships. Godai and Kozue's relationship is none of his business, and gentleman that he is, Mitaka doesn't want to insert himself in it and cause problems for everyone. |

Yusaku Godai wrote: I'm not being wishy-washy when I say you're absolutely right! That, at least, is a good cover story for Mitaka. Apart from being second nature to
him to act a gentleman in front of a lady, and put up a good face on Godai's troubles to Kozue, I think it's part of his calculus to win Kyoko. It
cannot be denied that Mitaka positions himself better with Kyoko if Kozue succeeds with Godai. And you have to admit he's being disingenuous when he is
representing himself as shy and that's why he hasn't made a move yet with Kyoko. Mitaka's performance in front of Kozue and her situation with
Godai is one of those scenarios that I imagine would lead Kozue to note certain subtle inconsistencies with how people act. It is part of the many loose
pieces that I think Kozue, at least subconsciously, puts together by the end of the manga/anime which should lead her to conclude that both Mitaka and Godai
were going for Kyoko all along.
