...is it any good, or should I go for Mushishi or cult classic Message From Space (Uchu Kara no Message)
instead?

Are we talking 1986 live action movie or 2007 TV movie? Because the answer is very different depending on which one it is. haha

My answer would be the same either way. Both the 86 movie & the 07 drama are cheezy, and they look cheap. The only difference is in the movie we got a special bonus musical number. Besides, how can you go wrong with an old cult classic? |

2007.
I intend to lobby for expanded horizon for a convention this fall, by getting them to replace some of the late night dorama with other, older, live action, in particular anime-/manga-based ones. (What is popularly known as fogey series as "only old fogies" like myself are interested.) Two or three should be enough. I've already got Lupin III: Strange Psychokinetic Strategy Sukeban Deka the movie Gegege no Kitaro (2007, unsubbed) Yokai Monsters: 100 monsters

The 2007 one is fairly close to the manga, and the casting is very good in my opinion, plus you've got Misaki Ito as Kyoko, so you can't go wrong. Try
to get 'em to show it!

I agree. I was impressed by the casting for the 07 version and the actor for Godai is so adorable and as dorky as the animated character! I honestly think the
acting can be a teensy bit better tho, seemed a bit dry and feelingless in the beginning

I didn't think the casting was all that good. Ichinose was too young and thin, Yotsuya seemed too old, the woman playing Akemi wasn't anything like
her, and both Kyoko and Godai were way too beautiful. I did like how cramped they made Ikkoku look, but it was too clean and it looked brand new. One thing I
liked about the movie was how everything looked old, used & dirty. I think the casting looked closer to the manga. They were certainly a lot more average
looking. And, again, Special Bonus Musical Number!

Q: just how many episodes are there in the 2007 LA ?
I've watched the first one and here's my opinions: - the actress who played Kyoko did a bad job : I don't like the way she held the broom while dithering her body (the way you hold a broom can tell quite a bit about yourself, you know); not only she looked *nothing* like Kyoko (not nearly as beautiful), her expression of emotions was cheesy + too sharp (or should I say "fierce"?), she totally lacked gentleness. - the one who played Godai in 07 version didn't look as character-like as 1986 "Godai", but his acting was good. - only Godai grandma was perfect! LOL

Yikes really? That's a shame. From some of the promotional material I've seen it looks like it might even cover up to Coach Mitaka dealing with his dog
phobia.

They'd have done better to merge Ibuki and Sayoko.

Well, I watched it. My fear was realized, they did merge Yabuki's character into Kozue's. That totally ruined every scene involving Kozue for me. Kozue
delivering lines of Yagami just doesn't seem natural. And seeing Kyouko telling Kozue "Godai loves ME" was especially strange. Over all, craming
entire manga left into two hour show inevitably made everything feel rushed. Obvious victim was Souichiro, who was practically forgotten. As a result
Godai's scene in front of Souichiro's grave, probably the best scene in MI, fell flat. But given the impossible task of condensing it so much down, it
could've easily been worse. Watching many of great scenes from manga acted out was somewhat enjoyable. Even the acting was better this time. TV Asahi
probably should have committed to making this a series.
p.s. I commend the script writer for keeping Godai a "shuushoku ronin". I hated the anime for changing it (ruined the whole thing, in my opinion). |

I'm curious, since I really genuinely enjoyed the first half of the TV drama, is there any place to get a to download the second half online? I hate asking
for downloading sites and prefer to buy most of my viewings, but seeing as how this will most likely never make it's way overseas I thought I'd at
least ask some fellow fans here if its out there somewhere for viewing. I'd really enjoy being able to watch it since Maison Ikkoku is probably my favorite
anime/manga and I take whatever I can get for it. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
If this is not allowed then forgive me for my ignorance. I would love to import the real thing, but only if the authentic DVD contains English subs so I can get an inkling of the conversation.

imnho wrote:A "shuushoku ronin" is a person who has graduated from college but has not found long-term employment, right? I certainly agree the manga is grittier than the anime for continuing for 2 years after Godai graduates. (But then, the timeline pretty well goes to pot in the 2nd half of the anime.) I have watched the first 30 mins so far of the new live action episode. I belly laughed a couple of times, which is good. I was disappointed in how they changed the puppet scene, but I loved the puppets. Their heads are little collectible dolls of RT's Kyoko and Godai. That is, they look like the manga characters rather than the actors in the dorama. How can these not be a merchandise tie-in, I am wondering. As for where to find it, googling something like "Maison Ikkoku Special Drama" will probably turn up some results. |

Finally finished the special. I agree wholeheartedly with Imnho's comments. Beyond that, I especially enjoyed:
Every scene with Yukari. The oden noodle scene. (In the manga this scene was the aftermath of the Prince and the Pauper.) This dorama slowed down for that scene and gave the whole thing, which is particularly nice since it was not in the anime. The final graveside scene, even though as Imnho said, Souichiro got short shrift. I can't imagine this dorama will win over new fans to MI. It is just too choppy. But it was a reminder for me of just how good the original is, and for that I am grateful to the makers of the dorama. |
