It's quite funny when you think about it: Inuyasha = Kyoko Kagome = Godai Kikyo = Soichiro Here it's a guy dealing with a more or less similar situation. Just that these are completely different characters (plus Kikyo is not really all-dead). I think it's quite an interesting comparisson. What do you think?

The only example I can pull out is with Ranma but if what you say is what I'm thinking about then it proves it with Inuyasha as well.

Anyway, I thought I'd answer on this post because I thought exactly the same thing when I read parts of Maison Ikkoku. I think Kikyou really serves as a lost first love. Obviously the senario is different (as she's still walking the earth) but she's really not supposed to be. Lots of people in the manga comment on how she's really dead and not supposed to be still on earth. I think if Inuyasha was in a normal setting where people could not come back to life (like Maison Ikkoku) Inuyasha's relationship to Kikyou would be VERY much like the one within Maison Ikkoku. Actually, this is why fanfiction writers who make Inuyasha hate Kikyou annoy me so much. Inuyasha is NEVER going to hate Kikyou. He'll always love her, but in a different way from Kagome (just like in Maison Ikkoku). P.S. I'm more familiar with Inuyasha than Maison Ikkoku (give me time, hehe). If I'm wrong with anything in that regard, please correct me. It'll be interesting to know. Also, if my post didn't make sense, tell me. I'll try to rephrase using more examples.

I haven't (yet) read Maison Ikkoku, but I've read a LOT of reviews and summaries of the stories in that series and am more or less acquainted with the overall storyline. A lot of good storytellers reuse themes in their stories (I find myself repeatedly writing about young boys searching for father-figures), but the key is to include that without seeming repetitive. Takahashi seems to have done that well. I wouldn't have thought of that parallel if you hadn't brought it up, but it's very valid.

Bingo. If she had remained dead (and assuming that anybody knew that Inuyasha once had a thing for her), I think it would have run along similar lines... except without the pesky neighbors. As a small addition, I just took a peek at one of the sample pages they display on amazon.com. And... uh... perhaps it was because of the content of this thread, but when they showed Kyoko being ticked off and/or jealous, she looks QUITE Inuyasha-like... :)

Kagome and Inu-Yasha's make known their romantic feelings toward each other much earlier in the series than do Godai and Kyoko. I would even go as far to say that Inu-Yasha and Kagome have a different kind of love for one another than Kyoko and Godai do. Theirs is more adult, while Inuyasha and Kagome's is high school/first love sort of thing. Its really difficult for me to compare much between the series other than the interesting characters and the theme of love that they both share, and of course they share the same author.

Wow, I like that phrase! All sex-changed, of course, and the personalities are somewhat different. But I think the theme overall is similar, and it's interesting to see how she handles the same thing in a different scenario.

One line reminded me of Inuyasha's love triangle -- Yusaku thinking that he can't compete with Kyoko's dead husband.

Still, you can say that Inuyasha and Kagome haven't confessed their feelings to each other yet. They may have shown affection to each but Inuyasha and Kagome never told each other (afaik) that they love each other (whereas Godai said quite early to Kyoko that he loves her). It depends o how you look at it...

I laughed and commented to my husband how much I just liked the way Takahashi writes relationships. Now, I'm more into Inuyasha yet than Maison, as of now... but give me time. ;) I read the first two manga (albeit in English... I am now on a Japanese mangahunt) in two nights, and I went out and got the others that were available soon after. o.O I kinda agree with Ah, that Godai kinda started making his feelings more clear (and was obviously much more willing to admit them to himself) than was Inuyasha to Kagome. Kyoko's ties to Soichiro reminded me of Inuyasha's ties to Kikyou, so yes, my first impression was that Godai, Kyoko, and Soichiro were like Inuyasha, Kagome, and Kikyou. ...and does anyone count the drunken stupor of Godai announcing that he loves Kyoko as admitting he loves her? ;) Fro some reason, I'd LOVE to see that happen to Inuyasha. Although I know it won't... it would just be freeking hilarious. ;) Sometimes that fantasy is worth turning into reality...

Maybe it's because I read MI's Manga and watched IY's Anime -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Exactly, and there is a really good example of this, (for me anyway) in the Inu-Yasha manga, during the Peach Man storyline, is where Kagome and Inu-Yasha embrace and she's happy that he's come to save her and whatnot, which is something you never see until very late in Maison Ikkoku, but in the Inu-Yasha anime, that storyline is pushed way back, so that doesn't happen. Also, when I say that the relationship progressed faster, I mean the feelings on both sides. Godai does admit his feelings to Kyoko relatively fast, but she doesn't reciprocate until, well... a loooooong time later. Inu-Yasha and Kagome on the other hand both have feelings for each other fairly early into the series, even though they still continue to argue. I think Inu-Yasha and Kagome's relationship is much closer to Ranma and Akane's than it is to Godai's and Kyoko's.

Maybe because of the factor, that Soichirou is deceased, while Kikyo is deceased, but still roaming the earth. But now i know, i agree. I'm going off memory here, but The same way (manga) Godai says in front of Soichirou's grave Quote "Even if she (Kyoko) returns all her mementoes... I don't think Kyoko will ever forget you ... I guess i mean... She just CAN'T forget you..." "Because you're part of her soul now... But i can't resent you." "You've been a part of her since the first day i met her... and i still fell in love with her" "So... I'm taking you into my life too. As part of her" That's simelar to the way Kagome eventually see's Inu Yasha. She's got feelings for Yasha, but Kikyo is a part of him, and he will always love her because of their past (sort of thing) Also, i never think of Inu Yasha as Hating Kikyo, how could he as he would've become a Human over youkai for her! Same with Kagome, she can't hate Kikyo, she gets sad and hurt when Yasha is with her, but (has a pretty image of a forgiving Kagome) she's in love with Inu Yasha and seems content with just that... Anyway, i'm probably babbling because i lost my real train of thought. Sorry~ ^,^ thanks for reading

Since Kagome is actually Kikyo reincarnated, the fact that Kikyo even exists really changes the relationship of things. InuYasha can't hate Kikyo, not only because he does still love her, but because she is part of Kagome and Kagome is part of her. If he hated Kikyo, it would almost be like hating Kagome. None of them ever say this outright, but I'm sure all three know it. And it's hard for Kagome to hate Kikyo, even though she's tried to kill Kagome before, because she knows how InuYasha feels about Kikyo and understands that she can never take that place in his heart. However, I think it's very easy for Kikyo to, not so much hate as resent Kagome, because Kagome gets to be with InuYasha all the time. And, as we've seen happen, he will abandon (I use the term loosely) Kikyo to protect Kagome. I would have to say this is Takahashi's most effective love triangle so far. It isn't just a matter of who InuYasha loves most and picking her, there's the fact that one of them's dead, one of them's from the future, Naraku's involvement in the entire situation, and so on. When it comes to Yusaku and Soichiro, like you said, Yusaku has already accepted him as part of Kyoko. The relationship between Kyoko and Yusaku isn't really that complicated. Kyoko knows how he feels about her, but won't admit to herself that she feels the same way. It's very much an internal struggle for her between her love for Soichiro and being faithful to him (even after his death), the prospect of both her futures with either Yusaku or Mitaka, and making her choice without seeming to give in to her parents naggings to get re-married. (Not to mention the effect of his massive emotional baggage, and the permeating weirdness around Kagome's not-so-coincidental time travel and encounters with him). I agree with you, it adds a very strange and very unique dynamic. It's a lot easier to reconcile a lost love if that person isn't still hopping around the place. IE, Soichiro's presence is entirely through Kyoko and her emotions and memories, sort of like in "Rebecca." (That's the best parallel I can draw!) True, Kyoko isn't obsessed or anything, nor is Godai overwhelmed by it, but Soichiro sort of hangs over the proceedings in a non-supernatural way.

And considering Inuyasha, since Kagome is the reincarnation of Kikyo, it is very hard to choose. Also, considering that Kagome is from the future and Kikyo is somewhat... gone, he can't really choose. The only thing holding Kikyo in the land of the living is really just her "hatred" and what holds Kagome in the era is the well. If any of these things were to be gone, Inuyasha could have none. Back to Soichiro & Kyoko. Kyoko still remembers him and he lingers on... whereas Godai is in the middle... or somewhere there. "I may be growin' old, but I ain't gonna grow up."
