First off, LadyRelena, thanks very much for giving me some incentive to write about Ranma 1/2 again. Now I might actually get the article I was supposed to write done.

First up, your statement that she can do nothing right is a fairly gross exaggeration - something you yourself admit by admitting (albeit grudgingly), that she's good at sports* and jogging. I'm not sure how much of the manga you've read, but later volumes also allow us to add schoolwork and first aid to the list**.

Second, she is actually quite proficient at martial arts - good enough to fight off a horde of armed teenage boys on a daily basis, and to hold her own against Kodachi despite being caught off guard, whilst exhausted from previous activity. Considering she is one of the only established characters whose purpose in life has not been martial arts, that is demonstrative of a reasonable level of skill.

* And for the record, she's not an 'average' player, she's a very good player. Good enough to be the first person the gymnastics team thinks of when they are themselves incapacitated, even though she doesn't actually take gymnastics.

** Though she starts off rotten, she patches up Ranma after his fight with Rouge and Pantyhose Taro without any difficulties and - more tellingly - without any complaints from him.

Always is something of an exaggeration; I can only count a handful of instances where Akane's cooking is used as a gag in the manga after the halfway mark, and in one instance Ranma actually asks for her to cook.

Examples? As many times as I've read Ranma 1/2, I cannot remember one instance in which Akane hits Ranma after he saves her from attack, and only a handful of instances in which she interferes in his fights after being told not to.

I find it somewhat amusing that you are using the episode as evidence of Akane's lack of training, only to dump on its conclusion because you dislike it.

I don't see Shampoo or Ukyo trying to learn new moves or to progress either. Or Mousse, for that matter. In fact, we never see them training at all. Period. Are they a disgrace to the name of martial arts as well?

Most of the times Akane hits Ranma in the manga, actually, it is because he provokes it with his name calling. Such instances where she hits him 'for things that are not his fault' are limited to his supposed trysts with her romantic rivals, where explanation wouldn't really do any good anyway. Simply put, Ranma is too unlucky by far for his explanations to be credible. It would take an inhuman amount of trust and faith in his better nature and in his dedication to Akane for Akane to believe that he was totally without fault.

This is fanon, not canon - it's a fan theory treated as a fact. And not a particularly good one, either. Offhand, I could think of a dozen or more other reasons why Akane might like Ranma. Perhaps because he's honourable, intelligent, and lacks any real capacity for malice or lasting anger? Or maybe because, irrespective of the temptations he faces on a daily basis, he remains true to her? Or perhaps because she knows that she can rely on him - that he'll always be there if she really needs him, and that he'll give everything he has to keep her from harm. Or maybe even just because he's nice to look at.

As for your reason for why Ranma likes Akane - when he goes on to claim that he is happiest when he is with her, what does it matter why he came to feel that way?

Attacking the relationship because you disapprove of the justification that _you_ have created for it is beyond idiotic.

Point being? Ranma 1/2 is, from the start to the end, the story of Ranma and Akane coming to terms with the difficulties that surround their love - not about them coming to love one another. Their attachment is solidified long before Ukyo even enters the story - there is never a contest for Ranma's heart.

What human relationship is not formed on some level of providence - fate, chance, or whatever you choose to call it throwing two individuals together and giving them the opportunity to get to know each other better? Since when is life fair?

In your later posts, you claim that you use examples from the manga and the anime. Let's look at your argument to ascertain the veracity of that particular claim:

Point 1: Akane's design: You claim you dislike her blue hair and brown eyes because they are indicative of her character, yet provide no examples to demonstrate what you might mean, or in what respect. You also deride her fashion sense, but again fail to provide an example of a simple outfit that you dislike. Akane has the most of any character in the manga; surely it cannot be that hard.

Total example count: 0 (0 from anime, 0 from manga).

Point 2: Akane's competency: You reference a single OAV episode to prove that she is bad at crochet. No other examples to back up your claims that she is poor at martial arts, cooking or swimming (though that goes without saying).

Total example count: 1 (1 from anime, 0 from manga).

Point 3: Akane's cooking: Again, no examples, despite the claim that Akane is 'always forcing Ranma to eat her cooking.' If she's always doing it, you can surely provide at least one or two examples to back yourself up.

Total example count: 1 (1 from anime, 0 from manga).

Point 4: Akane interfering in Ranma's fights: No examples whatsoever, despite the claim that it is 'always' happening. If something is always happening, why is it so difficult for you to point out where?

Total example count: 1 (1 from anime, 0 from manga).

Point 5: Akane's lack of training: One example from the OAV - where Akane actually trained, contrary to your earlier assertion. Claim that Akane insists on branding herself a martial artist, again without examples to back it up.

Total example count: 2 (2 from anime, 0 from manga).

Point 6: Ranma and Akane's compatability: Claim that Akane is 'always' beating Ranma up, again without example. Claims about the basis for Ranma's love of Akane, and hers of him, again without justification. Claims made about Ranma's interactions with Shampoo and Ukyo, again without examples.

Total example count: 2 (2 from anime, 0 from manga).

So in a page long essay, in which you make several claims and present six key arguments, you've only managed to produce two examples to back yourself up - none of which are from the manga. You claim on several occasions that a behaviourial trend observed by yourself is 'always' occuring - if it is always happening, why can't you point us to one instance where it does? I must say that if one of my students handed me something like this to mark, I would fail them without hesitation and tell them to do it again.
