So, what's the best way to recommend Maison Ikkoku to a friend? |

Let's say you have a friend, and you really want that friend to give Maison Ikkoku a shot. What would you say the best way is? Would it be to just simply
recommend the anime, and say that one may have to watch about 6 episodes before the plot really gets going? Or would you ambush your friend, let's say,
about Christmas time, with the Christmas episodes (Episodes 43-44)? Or would you pick another couple or three episodes to ambush the friend with? Or does
someone have another suggestion? What would you say a most reliable method would be, given a semi "regular" person. (Definition of regular may not be
available as persons who like anime tend not to be normal.)

This is a mystery indeed. I personally have never recommended any anime to anyone else...but heres my suggestions:
If the person likes anime, I'd just hand him the first DVD and tell him to check it out. If they dont like it after the first few episodes, they might not enjoy the series. (going out of order always seems wrong to me, even though the plot may move quicker and prove to be more enjoyable for later episodes.) If it's an anime uninitiated, start them off with some Ghilbi movies first to expose them to the format, then spring the series on them. If they don't like Maison Ikkoku after that be sure to expose them to something everyone agrees in good, like Cowboy Bebop.

How to? | ||
|
(First): You have to know a little about the people your around. You can't just introduce it to anyone, especially to anyone over 35.
2nd: You can't mention the decade or year, don't say "It was origionally aired in 1986..." 'New' anime is always favored better than the old gold stuff like Ikkoku. Surpize em! "Hey, this is cool!" (after the 3rd eppisode) then reveal "Really? Well it's from NINETEEN-EIGHTY-SIX!" ha ha! 3rd Show 'em an eppisode that'll be a little away from the first, the thing about old gold school anime is that it always introduced it's potential viewers THEN it got into the storyline, some still like that tradional style, most don't. 4th Asking what the possible new fan thinks about each eppisode helps too! I whole-heartedly love this anime` and I'm 24. I'm only a few hours into this messageboard, I'm looking for online friends |

I think that Maison Ikkoku's story is pretty much universal. Imagine a Hollywood movie or American tv series about the relationship between a beautiful
widowed landlord and a young student tenant, complicated by bunch of crazy neighbors...I can totally see it. As long as somebody has an open mind about the
format of the series (manga/anime) I don't think it would take a big stretch at all for somebody who has no general interest in manga/anime to enjoy it.

I'd Simply start them off with the first two volumes of the manga. Then after that I'd introduce them to the anime. I'd simply say its one of the
best series out there that really relates to reality unlike those fantasy animes. Also probably the best romantic/comedy series I've ever seen. Almost
everything in Maison Ikkoku can happen in todays life. Thats what makes it so fun to read and or watch.

Although, being over 35 myself, I guess I had originally taken it as a given that MI would be a harder sell in the under 25 group. Welcome Sir Godai! Hope to see more of you!

I don't know about that, Kyoko and Godai are both under 25. As I said before, I think it's a story that just about anybody, regardless of nationality or age could relate to So honey...

Maison Ikkoku Review | ||
|
I have always thought that Maison Ikkoku was very underrated. It flew past the radars of many, even with the re-release of both the manga and anime these past
few years. As one of my favorite Takahashi series, I'm always trying to show more people the series and let them know what else is out there. I hope to
help with that in a review I wrote
on my blog. Being under 25 myself, I know people both older and younger that I've exposed the show to and have enjoyed it.
I'm not sure if this will help to recommend Maison Ikkoku to others, but I hope it at least gets people interested in the series a bit. |
