I started with the anime. I got about 2/3 or 3/4 through, went nuts because it was still in the process of being completed over here, and had to buy the
manga.
In my watch of the anime, I thought there was quite a bit of animus on the part of Godai against Mitaka. And Mitaka would condescend to Godai without mercy. Sure, Godai wouldn't kick Mitaka when he was down (like when he found out about Mitaka's fear of dogs), but I never thought that Godai and Mitaka's relationship started particularly well. It evens itself out, about the middle, where a certain understanding seems to be achieved. That boils over toward the end, of course. By contrast, I thought there was a few times when Mitaka shows his good side to Godai in the manga early on (like when he made him soup after Godai falls ill from his being exposed to the elements away from Ikkokukan) that never make it into the anime. I guess, all in all, my impression is that the anime expresses about the same relationship between Godai and Mitaka as the manga. I'm interested that the local library carries Maison Ikkoku anime! You don't have to say where you live. Can I ask you as to what size of community it is? Our local library seems willing to get manga (never heard about it before we showed up) but I don't know that they would be willing to buy the DVDs. I think I got to ask though. The more chance that Maison Ikkoku can get exposed to the public, the better! If someone likes it enough, they may decide they have to buy it. Like Hoshi said in another post, there is something to owning it oneself. It's a true joy.

Hmm...maybe I just happened to get a particularly nicey-nice bunch of episodes, then. The main thing (not the only one, but the big thing) that got me to
start this thread in the first place was at one point the Maison Ikkoku residents were going to get a drink and Godai asked Mitaka if he wanted to come along
and I was like "Ehh?!"

I actually plan on getting a masters in library sciences and becoming a librarian (knock on wood!) so if it actually happens I'll definitely make getting Maison Ikkoku out there a priorityIf that's the case, consider looking to the Midwest for a job. I say what I say with allot of smiles and winks, but if you were serious, I happen to think the Midwest has allot to offer. Especially Wisconsin. We're a liberal studies kinda State! And allot of natural flora and fauna. We have State Parks galore. Just a consideration. So you didn't start at the beginning of the anime? What episodes did you watch?

Lol, you guys in the midwest have seasons, right...yeah, for somebody who's grown up in western Washington that's a pretty scary thought. Our schools
do shut down for 1/2 inch of snow and we do collectively start complaining and whimpering when the temperature gets above 75-80 degrees. I'll keep it in
mind, but honestly I think I'm too much of a wuss.
I didn't start at the begining of the anime. I'm actually not sure where in the series the episodes I picked up started. Let's see...there was a mini-arc about a guy who moved into Maison Ikkoku and Kyoko started to like him, while the other tenants began to suspect that he was working for a company that wanted to raze the building. And one where Yotsuya et al tried to 'help' Mitaka with his phobia of dogs. There were also a couple of others, but I don't really remember what happened (it's actually been a month since I watched them). Do you have any idea where in the series these episodes were? Because now I'm curious

Do you have any idea where in the series these episodes were? Because now I'm curious Sounds to me like you picked it up just after the mid-point of the series. Episodes 49-52. That would represent the end of the second season of anime.
Yeah, by then, Godai and Mitaka seem to be more or less tolerant of each other. The two episode arch with the potential demolition of Ikkoku is one of my
favorite. And I think it is worked in masterfully. It comes right before Kyoko's decision that at some point she'll remarry. But keep in mind that
three of those episosdes are non-canonical by manga standards. So the animators could take some liberties with just how chummy Godai and Mitaka were.
The episode where Kyoko decides to remarry is a personal favorite. I think it is very neat how it is worked in to dove-tale the two episode story arch with
Mr. Mitsukoshi. It's one of the unique takes that anime MI has over manga MI. That disk may be worth another watch on my part, just because it brings
back such emotion in my mind.

Speaking of MAISON IKKOKU, I'm intrigued by the question of why Kyoko chose Yusaku Godai over Shun Mitaka ... I know both men love her
equally, but I'm wondering what it is that Kyoko sees in Godai that she obviously doesn't see in Mitaka ?!
Godai was immature, naughty and irresponsible at first, but throughout the series, he matures into an honorable young man who's able to accept Soichiro into his life! Mitaka is the opposite of Yusaku: he is calm, confident and isn't just the rich playboy type though. If Mitaka only played "chase and catch" on Kyoko, he deserved to be ditched. Yet he truly loves Kyoko and would do anything to make her happy. It isn't his fault that he was born rich and handsome. He remains the gentleman throughout the series. His fault was being rather forceful in the way of love because he's older than Godai, and therefore wants to settle down with Kyoko now rather than 6 or 7 years down the road (if Asuna didn't step in, Mitaka would never give up on Kyoko). Speak of love, it's obvious that Godai's love and Mitaka's are equal. So why did Kyoko choose Godai over Mitaka ?! Let's offer your insights into these characters! *** The only thing I hate in this series is its strong emphasis on looks, specifically on female looks : two men fell in love with a widow instantly because of her beauty! I wondered: what if she's just an average woman? Would they still fall in love with her? Hell no! |

Tenken wrote: I think one thing that played a part in Kyoko's decision to choose Godai over Mitaka was that he -needed- her in a way that Mitaka didn't. And everyone wants to be needed. While there's no doubt that they both loved Kyoko with all their heart, I think they loved her in different ways. Godai's love was more earnest, while Mitaka's was more of an adult love. |
