Possessed by an Oni Posts: 202 (06/30/08 06:54 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None This morning on YouTube, I saw a couple of posts saying that Ran looked Irish, and a follow-up post opined that Oyuki seemed like "a standard New Englander." This got me thinking: where on Earth (other than Japan) do you think the many characters of UY seem to fit in best? For instance, my first instinct on Benten was that she's a classic New Yorker due to her street smarts and willingness to speak her mind immediately. I've had second thoughts about this, since she's a bit more "blue-collar" than New York, so Detroit seems like a better fit. What do you think? Last Edited By: RanmaMoroboshi 06/30/08 06:58 PM. Tough, bossy Kurama could be from Russia. Inaba san seems like a polite German boy, the kind that like if anyone visited him he'd be like super exceedingly hospitable. Lum and her family sound like they can really be from I dunno either Los Angeles/OC. They're somewhat rich and powerful w/ technology and their daughter can go out and do as she pleases w/out having to go to school if she doesn't want to, hahaha. "Miss Shinobu won't you have some tea with me?"

But yeah, that's been the stereotype of NE'ers; reserved and stingy. There's a famous story about President Calvin Coolidge, from Vermont. He was at a party before he became Pres., and some ladies said they made a bet that they could get him to say more than three words. His response: "You lose." When people aren't around of course, I sometimes read the manga aloud and do what I think the characters should sound like English. I like to give Cherry an Indian accent like the Simpsons' Apu, since he's an ascetic who looks a lot like a Buddha statue. And I like to give Ryoko Mendo kind of the Northeastern upper-class accent, which just sounds really snooty a lot of times. Think of Catherine Hepburn pulling Ryoko's nasty pranks and you'll see why I like it.

As for Ryoko being a Northeasterner like Oyuki, her family seems even snootier. While the vision of Catherine Hepburn in this role is certainly a pleasing one, I see the Mendos coming from somewhere in Europe. They would work well as British or French royalty, though I lean them slightly toward France due to their massive castle and general attitude toward commoners. This leaves Ataru. Can his personality really be tailored to any particular area? San Francisco's reputation for freedom of everything might fit his, um, unique stylings, but he could be too liberal even for there. Anywhere else that could work?
