Joketsuzoku Villager Posts: 1 (05/08/09 07:57 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	This didn't really occur to me when I was first reading Ranma (I was, after all, like 10) but the fashion choices the characters make are really interesting. I actually think that despite Ranma's comments to the opposite, Akane is the most fashionable and femininely dressed of his fiancees. When she's not wearing her school uniform (that and her gi are probably the defacto outfits if Takahashi didn't feel like trying to figure out how to draw something else) Akane's actually a bit of a fashionplate. She always has some new cute skirt or pair of boots or adorable little dress. I get the feeling that Takahashi had a lot of fun designing her outfits, what with the effort that appears to go into them. As far as comparisons between the anime and manga visually, well Akane's and Ranma's fashion sense doesn't even begin to compare. I also find A LOT of the anime's color choices to be questionable--which is perhaps one of the positive aspects of the manga being mostly in black and white because you CAN'T make mistakes in color there. That's not to say Takahashi would--pretty much all of the color illustrations I've seen her do were nicely done and of course she knows how to use color. It's just the the use of color in the anime really dates it. I'd rather see Ranma in black pants and a red shirt, and inoffensive choice, than the ridiculous bright teal and and red get up they always had him. Don't even get me started on the questionable dress choices for Akane, my least favorite off the top of my mind being a horrible bright yellow dress with ginormous pink flowers on it. But then, obviously, the manga is much better done in pretty much every aspect than the anime. While I'm talking about visuals, though, one of the most interesting things about rereading Ranma has been looking at the progression of the drawing style. First, as Takahashi is trying to figure all the characters out, its a little rough. Then as time moves on things seem to become more rounded and shorter. All the characters start to look a little more cute and youthful. This book is definately during the cute stage. I think in the first part of the series, when Takahashi wanted her to, Akane would look pretty. Now at her best she simply looks adorable, though not in a gross out Asuza sort of way. I remember looking at the frames in the lockerroom where she gets excited about the presence of P-Chan when she presses him up against her breast (Ryoga's reaction is a laugh out loud moment by the way--almost on par with Shampoo ambushing the boys in the hotspring during the three legged race) and thinking that I didn't think it was possible for Akane to be drawn looking any cuter than that, although Ranma--hilariously--holds his own in his gym shorts. Then later as the series progresses the limbs get longer and the faces leaner everyone starts to look a little more sexy, in particular Ranma, Akane, and Nabiki. I think this drawing progression is really interesting and well done actually because the characters actually physically look like they are aging over time, but the change isn't sudden and obvious like between Happosai's first and second appearance. Okay. Sorry, I'm an art student, I can't help but geek out about stuff like this.

We've talked about the progression of Takahashi's characters through the series before, but I don't remember anyone saying they look as though theyve aged - though I could be wrong . I can see where your coming from, though. They appear more mature, become more defined as they lose their childish softness and gain a more angular form. Great comments! Hope you'll have more to say and will keep joining us for this fun discussion.

Your participation here will be very positive, I'm sure of that. As I previously said when we started this topic, I am also paying attention to her drawing style. I want to see if we can find specific stories or books from which we could affirm "Now she is drawing differently thean the previous ones!". Actually, I was originally going to comment that, in Volume 8, I felt that we could appreciate a more clear drawing, specially after the Dojo Destroyer story. I find a lot of interesting panels where Ranma and Akane (specially Akane) look really nice and different. I don't know how to explain it... you could tell by watching their eyes, the shape of their faces, the expression of their bodies, etc... Hinako Sensei 2 posted first and I fully agree with her comments. I think we are still very far away from volume 38 style, but there will definitely be intermediate changes before such stage. It will be very fun to see them with all of you guys! C u later!

Posts: 5423 (05/14/09 12:27 AM) Anything-Goes Martial Artist Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I completely forgot to explain the role's Akane thought she was going to be offered in the translation notes, as I said there she suggests "onna Sanshiro", "onna Rikidozan", "onna Kaiketsu Kurozukin". Onna, is of course "girl". The characters she mentions are... Sanshiro- Sanshiro, I believe, is a reference to Sanshiro Sugata, a badass judo master who was the main character in Akira Kurosawa's first film of the same name. Not to be confused with Segata Sanshiro, the badass Sega Saturn spokesman seen in some awesome comercials (look him up on You Tube!). Rikidozan- As a pro-wrestling fan, I'm familiar with Rikidozan, who's well known to wrestling fans around the world. He introduced pro-wrestling to Japan after WWII, and he fought against famous American wrestlers like Lou Thesz and Classy Freddie Blassie. He died after being stabbed by a yakuza in a nightclub. That's a pretty legendary way to go out. Kaiketsu Kurozukin- or "The Black Hood" is a Japanese film about a hooded swordsman (he looks like a ninja to me, but I'm not sure if he technically is or not) who defends the shogun against his enemies. Now that you mention famous wrestlers and judo fighters, I just want to comment that there is a very well known and beloved by japanese people judo master named Hidehiko Yoshida. He is claimed to have taken part in the most exciting fights ever in the story of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts). He is a judo master who not only uses judo style (grappling), but also some basic techniques of box punching. Something interesting is that he uses gi, even if that means that he has a disadvantage by doing that. (your enemy could grab your clothes and even choke you with it). He even was olympic champion.

Because I saw the OVAs first, I always knew that Ukyo was a girl. I've often wondered if I would have guessed at her true gender if I had read this story first. Ranma's line upon finding out that Ukyo is a girl, "'Scuse me, are those breasts!?" is classic. The very end where she discover's Ranma's curse and changes him back and forth seems like one of the most natural reactions anyone had in the series. laughs I'd probably do the same thing. I find it interesting that when Ranma impersonate's Ryoga's fiancee is his hair is very similar to how Akari's would eventually be (sandy colored with pink streaks). An interesting coincidence I suppose. It's nice to see how sensative Ryoga is. An interesting spin on the Godai/Mitaka dynamic. -Translation & Cultural Notes- ·Kuno is wearing a Piyo-Piyo bib, which of course is a Maison Ikkoku reference. ·In Kuno's imaginary future for Ranma and Kodachi, we see them in the poor house with Kodachi making fake flowers. In one of the recent Kyokai no Rinne chapters, we see Rinne doing the same thing. ·In the English translation they simply call Kodachi's alligator "Mr. Turtle". In the Japanese (and English tranlation of the anime) he is properly called Mr. Green Turtle (Midorigame-kun in Japanese). ·Some notes about Ukyo. She speaks in Osaka-ben, a regional dialect from, as the name indicates, Osaka. That's why in the English translation they give her a slight southern accent to try and indicate her different speech pattern. If you read Detective Conan, his rival Heiji Hattori also speaks using Osaka-ben (which they have changed to a New York accent in English). You can read more about Ukyo's signature dish, okonomiyaki on the site, here. ·Ryoga talks about how he wouldn't allow Ranma to have a second fiancee, no matter what they looked like. The little figures in the first panel are a haniwa and a doguu, the heart shaped face one is a "female figurine" from Gunma prefecture from the Jomon era (1000-400 BC). These are some of the oldest artifacts found in Japan. I had these three little guys drilled into me in my Japanese art history courses quite a few times. If I remember correctly during the Phoenix storyline, the shopkeeper makes some joke about his store's statue, and it shows this same doguu. I really need to go to our local Asian resturant and see if they have it. I actually laughed when I saw the Piyo-Piyo bib(I saw ads for Maison Ikkoku with Kyoko wearing her Piyo-Piyo apron)and nobody else got the reference but me. Akane's cookies(and all her cooking for that matter)have gotten alot of negative critisism. Infact, on Ranmaverse, Ranma called them salmon cakes when I began the RP. Lastly, I cracked up when I saw Ukyo at the end when she learned about Ranma's Curse. I think that would be EVERYBODY'S reaction. When you're young, you know you deserve love... and sometimes, as we get older, we forget that, no matter what we've done or what anyone tells us, we still do...

To distingish male and female Ranma in the manga, Takahashi always draws female Ranma with a shiny spot in her hair" If you see some of Takahashi's early colored-work on Ranma 1/2, you could actually see female ranma with brown hair, but then after kuno was introduced to the series, I guess that changed.

First, my computer froze and I lost it, then my cat jumped up on the desk, hit the mouse and closed the window. Each time, I was almost done. So after a little calming break to keep myself from throwing this computer out the window, I'm giving it another shot. I loved this chapter. Kodachi just feels free to leave class whenever she pleases. Her teacher even seemed nonchalant about her whirlwind of black rose petals. The front door not good enough for you, Kuno-chan? Oh and the look on Tatewaki's face when Ranma asked him to take a bath. It looked like something just popped. There was a classic case of the mind is weak, but the body is willing. There also seemed to be alot of electricity in this arc, reminding me of a certai oni-girl who enjoyed a bit of electricution, though there's no direct coorelation... In this book we get to see the introduction of Ukyo. Because I saw the OVAs first, I always knew that Ukyo was a girl. I've often wondered if I would have guessed at her true gender if I had read this story first. I was introduced to Uuchan through this arc and I didn't guess her gender, though I can't really see her as a him now that I know she isn't. Ranma's line upon finding out that Ukyo is a girl, "'Scuse me, are those breasts!?" is classic. I totally agree, and so was the subsequent water test and Ukyo's reaction: "Does cleavage make you insane?" The whole exchange was hilarious. This is one arc where I really hated Genma. Yeah Yeah, hate is a strong word, but it applies sometimes. He not only deceived Uuchan and her father, but took off with their only means of making a living. This makes me wonder: where was Uuchan's father during all of this? Didi he leave his little girl with Genma, thinking he wouldn't take off? Did she go back to him when she was left alone? Where is he now that she's fending for herself? Although she doesn't seem to have a problem living and working and going to school (quite the young woman), I would think she would miss her family even a bit. Oh my sweet, sweet Ryoga-kun. I think I started crushing on him during this arc. His heart is just so fragile and we see him torn apart here. He got mixed up in Akane and Ranma's love-hate thing and Ranma plays him. Ryoga was just so ready to be loved that he'd believe anything. He's so...so...well, there's no easy way to say it, so I'll just say it: he's stupid. Yes, my wonderful Ryoga-kun is a complete moron. How could a finacee you were engaged to as an infant know: 1 what you look like as a teenager 2 know where you are when you own parents are unlikely to 3 know you were cursed recently 4 know your 'pet' name and 5 most importantly, develop such a strong love for you before they meet you? Oh well, when someone who seems so in love with you and you're hoping for love, you'll jump in headfirst, I guess. The saddest part: Ryoga running away when he realized that he betrayed his never-confessed love for Akane. I really thought he'd be away for a long time after that. But, of course, when you love someone, you can't really stay away too long. And, in Ryoga's case, it lasted all of what, 1 minute before P-chan lept into her arms?

I liked this volume a lot, specially the cookies story. I feel sorry for Akane and her cooking hehe... someone should really teach her slowly . It can't be THAT hard. Besides, she seems to be a smart girl. I think it's just a matter of concentration.... when she cooks it looks more like a fight. If I had to pin point something, I'd say that I want to make my position clear here: I don't consider Ukyo to have showed a lot of skills in her fight with Ranma or Ryouga. She always used the surprise factor, some tricky devices, or her gigantic spantula on her side. I mean, arguments like "Ukyo was able to hold Ryouga's attack for some seconds, therefore she is better than XXXX" are useless if we consider that she had these advantages on her side. Besides, Ranma himself will say that Ukyo has certain advantage because of her spatula (but that's a looot of volumes ahead from here). At least for defensive purposes, which sounds logical. Well, nice re-reading. See you guys.

I always liked how Takahashi occasionally made her characters rewear some of their outfits. I think that was actually a plot point in Maison Ikkoku if I remember correctly... something Kyoko wore the first time she visited Maison Ikkoku. Of course we see Happosai's aggrandized youthful version of himself as well. Surprisingly Cologne looked quite nice, this is always where we learn her name for the first time too. I also noticed really old fashioned American flag swimsuit. I wonder why Takahashi decided to give him one of those 1920s style full swim suits. laughs In the final panel of this storyline we see Ranma wearing a similar outfit, so maybe these are still fashionable in Japan. Ranma seemed to be particularly wiseass in the Love Pill storyline, teasing Akane that he'd let her look at him and then laughing in her face when she asked if he was telling the truth. In the return of Mousse chapters we see Akane winning a lottery game for a pig doll. Akane must be very good at these games, because she later wins a ticket to Zekkyo Hot Springs (and Kasumi remarks about her good luck at that game then). When Ranma is chasing duck Mousse through the festival, I've always wondered... did he really crucify Mousse with those pinwheels? Because it certainly looked like he did! The of course we have the Tsubasa storyline which is really funny throughout. Reading it now it seems so random, having him dress up as garbage cans and vending machines and stuff. I think I probably used to wonder if there was some strange joke I was missing out on, but that's just Takahahsi's unique sense of humor. Overall I thought Mousse's daytime fight with Ranma and the Tsubasa chapters were the strongest stories. The rest of the volume wasn't my favorite stuff. I remember seeing the anime episodes for these prior to reading the manga (Viz had gotten ahead at that point with the anime), and for whatever reason, if I saw the anime version first, I had a harder time appreciating the manga chapters. -Translation & Cultural Notes- ·When Ranma tells Akane to put her blindfold back on she says "No, my prince on a white horse might come along!" shortly thereafter Happosai arrives on a white horse and Shampoo says "Is more like nut on a white horse." This was actually a clever pun in the original where Akane said "prince" (ouji-sama) and Shampoo said "old man" (oji-sama). ·Mousse's mask looks a bit like Mrs. Mizunokoji from Urusei Yatsura. I'm not sure what specific mask that is supposed to be. I have a copy of an old Noh mask I bought at Todaiji in Nara, but his female mask doesn't look familiar to me. ·The fair that everyone goes to is called "matsuri" in Japanese, a festival. I often wonder where these are set up. In the town I lived in my school had one, but there never was a "neighborhood" matsuri like I assume this one to be. Everywhere seemed so crowded it seems like it would be difficult to have room to have a big one. It also looks like some yakuza-types run the games, which is similar to the weird carnies that run travelling circuses here. ·Tsubasa disguises himself as a statue of a guy carrying a load of wood. I'm not sure if that's supposed to be anyone recognizable or if it's just something Takahashi made up. Perhaps Tachihaki knows. His other odd disguise is a kasa obake or umbrella demon. In the love pill storyline, sure, Ranma teased her quite a bit and was frankly a jerk, but he was willing to be the one she fell in love with at the end. He does care about her, even if he's reluctant to say so most of the time. Of course, he almost drowned her in the process, but I'll overlook that... Happy mistaken for a tako - priceless. Wasn't the octopus bigger in the anime, if I remember correctly? I wonder how Happy got rid of his 'lover'? Yeah, Yoiko, I like the original Japanese better ouji-sama and oji-sama - very clever. But, I guess they did the best wordplay they could with the translation. Happy's view of himself as a youth aggrandized - no kidding! It actually reminds me of another, more recent Rumic character with an aggrandized view of himself: Rokumon and his flashback of he and Tamako-san. In the Mousse storyline, I was always shocked that Mousse was so incompetent that he actually thought Akane was a stuffed pig. I mean, couldn't he at least tell that it was the size of a baby and didn't struggle in the least? Ranma was cruel to Akane here too: "Akane how'd you get down there?" He got his though when he was 'volunteered' for Mousse's act. And, again, he shows that he cares about Akane when he promises to marry her as a duck - or was he just afraid of Soun... Well, YH, as far as Mousse being crucified, I always assumed that the pinwheels went through his feathers and held him in place rather than going through his wing itself. If I'm wrong then, ouch! In the return of Mousse chapters we see Akane winning a lottery game for a pig doll. Akane must be very good at these games, because she later wins a ticket to Zekkyo Hot Springs (and Kasumi remarks about her good luck at that game then). Well, she's clumsy, has no figure and cooks horribly, the universe has to make it up to her somehow . Oh my goodness, the first time I saw Tsubasa unveiled as a boy I just thought to myself "Well, he's perfect for Uu-chan." - I didn't see that coming! Of course, Uu-chan doesn't think so. Though in retrospect, he was a little too obsessed about the whole crossdressing thing for Uu-chan, which I can completely understand. Ukyo is masculine and gave up her femininity awhile ago, but she still retained some of her girlishness. By contrast, Tsubasa is always in something frilly. The funniest part of that whole storyline was Ranma trying to turn the 'lesbian' straight with that corny date. I'll tell you what, if Tsubasa was really a girl and a lesbian, that sure wouldn't convince her to be otherwise! The fair that everyone goes to is called "matsuri" in Japanese, a festival. I often wonder where these are set up. In the town I lived in my school had one, but there never was a "neighborhood" matsuri like I assume this one to be. Everywhere seemed so crowded it seems like it would be difficult to have room to have a big one. It also looks like some yakuza-types run the games, which is similar to the weird carnies that run travelling circuses here. Oooh! what kinds of games did you play there?! Get any cute prizes? From what I've seen in Ranma and UY, they do seem to be very much like the county fairs we have here: midways with cheesy games and cheesy prizes with plenty of unhealthy, yet delicious, foods to try and, of course, exhibitions of curiosities and talented artists and acrobats. I've always wanted to visit one, though it's the kind of place I would want to visit with a local. So do the same assumptions about the games exist: they're all fixed? ·Mousse's mask looks a bit like Mrs. Mizunokoji from Urusei Yatsura. I'm not sure what specific mask that is supposed to be. I have a copy of an old Noh mask I bought at Todaiji in Nara, but his female mask doesn't look familiar to me. Actually, I'd always assumed that it was a Noh mask, though I don't really 'noh' a thing about Noh, so it's very possible I'm wrong. He likes to dress up. In my view he though Ukyo would like him if he dressed as a girl much as she dresses as a boy. Tsubasa is good at disguises. Since there's no further word manga wise after the three chapter storyarc maybe Tsubasa stops dressing as a girl and well maybe even stops love for Ukyo but the world will never know.
