Wow, sure enough the article even says Tekiya are like American "carnies"! That's pretty interesting. As for the o-men mask, we actually have an Inuyasha o-men mask that Yusaku won at a Japanese culture festival he went to in college.

I think most of them are fixed. The one I went to didn't have too many games that I remember... since it was put on by students there were a lot of cooking booths, some people that had formed bands played some music. It was a little more like the college festival that was shown in Maison Ikkoku actually.

With this volume we enter the 1990s. Needless to say volume 11 contains my absolute favorite story from the series, which is the Yoiko Hibiki storyline. Why this was never animated I'll never know. Unfortunately this also contains one of the few sets of color pages I've looked for the longest and been unable to find. I always liked the little details of this storyline like getting to find out more about Ryoga's life, how he rarely sees his parents, and random things like him showing Akane the video of Shirokuro as a puppy. I don't know why I always thought that was funny. Ryoga's a softy it seems.

The Happo Fire Burst story is quite funny as well. I can remember playing the Hard Battle video game and laughing at Happosai's fireworks, but I never thought they'd explain why he used them, so I remember being pleasantly surprised there was a story behind it. His dressing up like a monkey to expertly sneak into the hot springs was well done too. *laughs*

Akane jumping to the conclusion that Ranma is trying to rape her was quite funny to. She certainly has an active imagination. It reminded me of the story in Maison Ikkoku where Akemi was afraid to leave Kyoko alone at New Year's with Godai thinking he might try to do the same. I can remember one the old debate threads about Akane tended to focus a lot of her unwillingness to trust Ranma. As much as I like Akane, she seems really, really unreasonable in this story. *lol*

-Translation & Cultural Notes-
·Yoiko is written with the kanji meaning "good child".
·In the English version Viz called Ryoga's dog "Checkers". Her name is actually "Shirokuro" (White Black).
·We see the snow goggled dougu that we mentioned in a previous culture notes section when Yoiko slips away from Ryoga during their walk.
·As Kuno recalls Ranma hugging him, instead of the usual flowers that surround the flashback, we get Venus Fly Traps. *laughs*
·I seem to remember something about a TV show in Japan about girls in bikini's at a pool. I can remember if it was a regular New Year's Eve tradition to show this program or not. I tried to look it up but couldn't find anything. I know Kohaku Uta Gassen is a traditional TV show to watch on New Year's Eve, but I can't recall if there is a bikini related show like Happosai was watching.
·The game Shampoo and Akane play that resembles badminton is called "Hanetsuki". It's traditionally played by girls.
·Special toshi-koshi soba is served on New Year's Eve and is a tradition, just like black eyed peas are surved here on New Years (though that may be something only southerners do here in the USA).
·When Ranma breaks the shuttlecock on Akane's head something pops out. This is called a "kagami mochi". Again, this is another item associated with the New Year holidays.
