Cool. Ha!
I like Benten because of how loyal she is to Lum. She's a real friend to her. I like Sakura because of her maturity. And I dig priestess garb. I also like Ataru if for no other reason that you just can't keep the jerk down. |

My favorite character changes every few days, depending on which was the last story I saw. I think today it's Sakura, but it revolves between Lum, Ataru, Ryuunosuke, Shinobu, Mendo, Ryoko, Ran, Benten, Cherry (yes Cherry), Ryuu's father and Sakura.
I like all the remaining characters too. There aren't any I don't like (at least no manga characters), but the ones above are always in the running as my favorite. |

Ataru: I think it's a hoot how a guy who's such a reprehensible jerk could be so self-righteous. Plus he's just kinda cool: I mean, who doesn't wish they could do whatever they want all the time? Godspeed, Ataru! Lum: Goofy and fun, and always a source of wacky adventures. Also high on the list: Ryunosuke, Shinobu, Sakura, Benten, Mendo, Megane, Ran... |

Ataru learns one thing: Never, ever, put a ribbon that curbs demon powers on Lum, 'cause when he takes it off of her, she discharges more than a "few" zarks. (Ouch).

I also think Sakura and Mendo are hilarious and great, and though he doesn't show up until near the end, I LOVE Inaba. Truth be told, I like pretty much all of the characters -- at least the ones in the manga, I haven't seen too much of the anime yet. I have to admit that sometimes Shinobu annoys me, but I could never actively dislike her because I just feel so sorry for her all the time. Poor Shinobu. XD |

Ataru is certainly my favorite one, is personality is not the best, but he is the one who brings more fun to the series. One thing is shore, if wasn't Lum, Ataru will not hunt girls so much as like he does, and all the biggest confusion and funny scenes will not probably happen most of the times. If Ataru accepts to marry with Lum from the beginning, perhaps hall of this will not happen, so Ataru is certainly one important piece on the storyline evolution of UY... and thats why he is my favorite!

As others have noted, it's really hard to pick out a single UY character as the favorite. But if I had to pick, it'd be a tie between Lum and Cherry. (See, I told you this was hard.)
Lum is fun to watch and makes things happen. Cherry is kinda like the comedy relief within this comedy series. (^_*) |

One interesting thing about this series is how much the viewpoints shift. Most of the time, of course, you find yourself sympathizing with Ataru. And then, for instance, in "Angry Lum-chan" and "Give Me Back My Horn" Ataru is really the bad guy, and I mean downright nasty, and the equally horny pervert Ten really is a "good boy". Well, at least you end up rooting for him and cheering when he fries Ataru at the end.

That's right. It was the old Panda mailing list. I did compositing on a couple stories on Project ILM back in the day, and a few odd desktop toys here and there. But I lost touch for a time. Now it seems I've got two aliases on this board. Going to have to try to keep track of them

Back to the topic at hand, I have to admit lately a certain appreciation for Sugar, Ginger, and Pepper. On the one hand they're adorable in a goofy, "kitten-in-a-beer-glass" way, but on the other hand I just want to whack them repeatedly upside the head with a rolled-up newspaper. The way they talk in Japanese and how they get smacked around always cracks me up, too. |

My top 5 character list:
Oyuki - She's to me what Lum is to most of the male cast of the series...only I'm a 'little' less fanatical, we also share quite a few personality simalarities like being cynical and aren't easily angered Benten - She's cool and almost as cute as Oyuki, plus I like how she DOESN'T take to Ran's crap... Mendou, Shuutaro - He's on this list mostly because I'm comparing him to Kuno, and since Kuno's my 3rd most hated Ranma character, that makes Shuu my 2rd fav UY character Ryuunosuke - I'm really not sure why I like Ryuu-chan, I guess as Ranma's predessor she plays the role well, and I kind of sympathize with her since I have parental issues too... Onsen-Mark - He's the Japanese version of my Senior Comp teacher from last year(Who everyone called the who I just loved to 'screw' with his 'No Opinion in Essays' policy Alvein-Ryuu Saishuu Ougi! I'd have to say it's a tie between Shinobu and (as oddball as this may seem) Chibi.
Shinobu just seems like a kindred spirit. And I often really feel for her. I've still no idea why I like Chibi. Maybe it's his funny sounding voice? I have noticed, though, that he's usually the one to accompany Megane on something if Kakugari and Perm aren't around, making me think he could be 2nd-in-command, if Lum's Bodygaurds do have some sort of rank. Or maybe it's just that since he's the smallest, it's easiest for Megane to bully him into his schemes. I dunno. Maybe I like him cuz I'm short, myself? Well, probably not as short as him, but... anywho... ya. |

Chibi is pretty much the lowest ranking of the group of four. As you guessed, the reason he's often a key player in Megane's plans is because the most spazzy and easiest to manipulate. You could say he's the bi(t)ch of the group. Also, his VA Issei Futumata really brought his character to life and made him a far more interesting character than the other two. So the animators found him more useful of a character to write into an episode than the remaining two guys.
Even Perm has a pretty distinct personality too. He's more independent than the others and you see him doing his own thing more than the other guys (particularly since he's partially based on the manga character Kosuke). He's probably the most normal one though and doesn't seem to have as much of an unhealthy obsession with Lum as the others. I'd say only Kakugari doesn't really have much of a personality to speak of. Not much you can say about him other than he hangs around Chibi a lot and shares a big-brother kind of relationship with him. |

Since we're on the topic of Lum's Stormtroopers, I sometimes came across websites listing their "real names". I used to just dismiss it as something a few fans made up, or that was taken from some old fanfic that caught on.
Recently I finally got the last "Shonen Sunday Graphic" I needed (Vol 1), and sure enough, that's where the names were listed. So I suppose that lends a little more credibility to the names given to them. |

Perma's real name is the simplest to know, as already said it's based on the manga's Kosuke character...
Megane's was quite easy too, his mother called him "Satoshi" in some episodes!  But about Chibi (Akira) and Kakugari (Hiroyuki) things are different, the only help you can found seems to be really Shonen Sunday Graphics...
