Okay, I know Takahashi sometimes bases her characters from a past manga she's done, whether it be character design or personality. But this snapshot of
Tsubame! I know it's with his eyes closed and all, but still, it just kinda shocked me at that moment about how much he looks like Godai!

It is a commonly held belief - if it hasn't been confirmed by Takahashi-sensei herself (I can't recall at the moment if it was) that Sakura and
Tsubame's relationship was very much like that of Godai and Kyoko. MI ran from '80-'87 and UY ran from '78-'87...perhaps they were
something of parallel relationships... or perhaps she was trying to insinuate that the ending of MI is also what the reader could assume would happen with
Tsubame and Sakura...
Yeah, that pic does resemble Godai-kun quite a bit! |

Indeed, Sakura and Tsubame both share a striking resemblance to Kyoko and Godai. |

This topic came up a couple years ago and someone explained that Takahashi used Sakura and Tsubame to spoof the ongoing drama of Kyoko and Godai's
relationship.
It's particularly clear in the UY story where Lum makes soap, which Sakura accidentally uses, causing her skin to become incredibly slippery. Tsubame then proceeds to agonize over what he perceives to be Sakura's coldness and indifference to him, when in reality she can't embrace him or hold his hand because the soap residue causes her to slide away or shoot off into the atmosphere. Despite Sakura's explanation of what's happened, Tsubame doesn't pay attention to what she says and continues to bemoan the fact that their relationship is doomed. It's a pretty hilarious send up of MI. Ataru falls quite naturally into the instigator role that the apartment residents would usually play - as when he slips fans into her hands to make it appear that a very serious statement she's made was a joke. Also check out the story where Ten gives the gang an alien product he claims will show your perfect match, but actually shows the opposite. Tsubame's waffling on whether he should give up on Sakura is pretty great. |

I also happen to remember a story where Tsubame couldn't go on a date with Sakura and made her wait like three hours because of his job. I guess that kinda hits the spoof mark, too. Amazing parallels right there. Also, ryogasgirl, I honestly never knew that the two were running at the same time until you pointed it out. But now I'm starting to see the connections here! |
