As much as Shinobu and Ataru would make a good couple, I still think he belongs to Lum. Otherwise, the anime/manga would just be a mushy romantic flick, and
comedy would be very dry.

Mmmh...I don't quite understand the connection between the beautiful song and the old "Reverse Psychology" approach.
However, I feel so bad for the Lum in the song  I'm very convinced that Ataru and Lum are meant to be, and I really can't image that suddenly
Ataru abandons Lum just so because a new girl shows up.
The exact meaning of "playing her cards right" that I wanted transmit is that Lum can't force Ataru to pay attention only on her elettrocuting, biting and scratching him. She needs to learn approaching him with her tender and sweet side, and Ataru needs to learn to realize that he's hurting her. Basically, the gist of the setup is that Lum decides to loosen the leash, so to speak. After Ataru tells her "Any girl would be better than you!" Lum tells him to go out with the next cute girl he randomly encounters. Lum does some hidden analysis of the new girl's compatibility thru Uruseian Aura Analysis Techniques, and is unpleasantly surprised with the readings. But she goes thru with her challenge (and the song tells fairly accurately how she feels about the situation), leading to a break up in their relationship... I've had the bump in their relationship planned since beginning the FUYS storyline, since I figured the only way Ataru would ever realize how much he loves Lum is if she didn't want anything to do with him... and he'll be in for the toughest fight of his life while trying to get her back. And no, I'm not a Lum - Ataru relationship hater... Over the years I've come to respect both of the characters for who they are. One of my favorite selections of background music to listen to is a 48 song playlist for their breakup, make up, engagement, wedding / reception and honeymoon sequences in the FUYS storyline. |

I'm very sorry, and probably I'm making myself pass like a dumb, but I really don't have idea of what is this "FUYS" you are talking
about. It's some kind of fanfiction? I'm not a native english speaker and I get a bit of difficulty with puns and initials...plus I'm relatively
young to this forum so if it is an old thing disccussed in the past topics, I don't know it.
However, since you wrote that there is a make up, an engagement, a wedding end a honeymoon between them, I understand that the situation of Lum in the song is only a phase and there will be a happy ending between Ataru and Lum! If is it so, I'm happy. Plus, I think you're right, you don't understand how much it's important a thing until you lose it. It's an universal rule and a clear law of love in Urusei yatsura. |

easy to forget that there are many non-native English speakers here. FUYS just means Final Urusei Yatsura Season.

....and for a non native speaker you do quite well. I rarely see anything from you which would tell me you are anything but a native speaker.
...and I do with for a happy ending for the happy, sometimes not-happy, but destined-to-be-together couple.

However I do love the relationship between Lum and Ataru, and I'll ever hope that they will be togheter forever, even passing through serious fights and risking to loose each other, like in the fifth movie. Whatever it takes for making them know how they feel towards the other. Both seeing them as squabbling friends or as real lovers, I like them as a couple too much! Ryogasgirl, as ever, you're a very kind person, thank you  !
But we are going slightly out of topic, what do you think Ryogasgirl? What would ever be able to stop Ataru?

I'm glad I was a little helpful. And don't worry - sometimes things which seem like they should be obvious, aren't...I've
done the same on a number of occassions.
As for the topic at hand, The only thing I can think of which would tame Ataru would be for him to realize and embrace his love for Lum. He's been running from it ever since the first race and hasn't slowed much during the course of the manga. Near the end, it seemed as though he was only chasing other girls to irk Lum. SPOILER: Especially during the last race where he tried to get Lum to come to him by flirting with other girls. Didn't work, did it, Ataru-kun. He made it obvious that he did love Lum, but hecouldn't quite say it. He has to accept that he does love her much more than he could ever love anyone else, then he'll be tamed. Yes, the jackel would no longer be wild - it's possible! |

after that, their way will be surely easier.
Takaholic - Eheh so it was you the inventor of "Sugoi". I've already read your nice fanfic on the various "Urusei yatsura fanfiction archives". It' very good! Congratulation! By the way I like your idea to associate nice songs on Ataru and Lum's moments. I like doing it too! Very beautiful that costume of throwing soy beans to the bride on oni weddings and its spectacular effect, it's nice and romantic at the same time! It's some kind of way to underline the particularity of the love between a human and a demon.
P.S. No need to apologies guys, I suppose it's something that always happens to "rookies"

No, I didn't invent Sugoi... Fred Lee Cain did that... I just popularized her in my home area. I've been using the last 50 years or so of music exposure to generate ideas for my storyline, or tailoring ideas to the songs I think best cover the situation I've already imagined. So in a way, the FUYS is the biggest songfic collection I've come up with... around 600 songs so far. But there are a lot of characters to play with, and plenty of songs to go around. I've planned a very special happy ending for Shinobu and Inaba, they've both waited so long for that special person to enter their lives, and put up with so much grief while doing so. The song that came to mind for Shinobu after watching the "Inaba the Dream-maker" OVA Special... "You Hold the Key" by Beth Neilsen Chapman Beth Nielsen Chapman - You Hold The Key One moment in the wink of an eye There was nothing i could say A strong feeling started up inside I knew time would not erase away For you, oh... As for Inaba, well we have some ideas for him as well.... especially after reading the manga story of his 2nd major appearance, "The Flower of Love and Courage". The Rain the Park and Other Things - The Cowsills (Inaba thinking about the first time he met Shinobu) [Not the first time she met him... which was during the OVA.] I saw her sitting in the rain, raindrops falling on her. [This event kept him searching thru multiple dimensions for years until he found Shinobu in Tomobiki.] Oh, and for Ataru's pursit of Asuka Mizunokoji thru the family obstacle course... a great instrumental classical piece. Aram Khachaturian's "Sabre Dance" great motion sequences mixed with an awesome aura of grace and beauty at the same time... fits Asuka and Ataru's pursuit of her perfectly. However, your little site is really nice and funny, I very admire people who dedicate a proper site on the net on what they like. Expecially if Rumic-related things. I love that sites like yours that gathers other fans different works of any kind. After all, I joined "Rumic world" for this reason... Wow Takaholic, very impressive your work of songfic, and you're right, there are so many songs that can be associated to anime moments, expecially UY. In fact I like very much AMVs, that is the thing that goes closer to the songfics, I love watching them on youtube. There are so many AMVs that I wish to do so bad, but I don't know if I would be able to realize them. The one that I wish to do the most is an idea that I found in one of these topics. I love AMVs myself, my favorite one has to be chettedizon's Lum and Ataru AMV using Survivor's classic song "The Search Is Over" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwe3KB-ROWI I'm not familiar with the Linkin Park song you mention, I'll have to listen to it... I gave up on pop music radio back in the mid-90s since I had to listen to a lot of (what I considered to be) garbage to hear a song I actually enjoyed. With my own tapes, CDs and iPod being available, I could tailor my own playlists, making radio's pop music fairly irrelevant to me. My own personal AMV that I think would be fun to create would be the Opening Video for my FUYS stories, using Lou Christie's "Lightning Strikes", which I consider to be Ataru's theme song. I may be time to run thru the movies and TV anime to find scenes to use... *************** Since Tomobiki means "to drag friends along with you" I decided to make this joke the core of the FUYS series of stories.
Next on the list? Princess Elle and the notorious Space Pirate Gardener!

So, asking sorry to the owner of the idea, I'll describe the AMV project with my words. Here's the test of In the end by Linkin park, you can seen some clear resemblance with the fifth movie events.

(5)The changing of Ataru's feelings towards Lum end his growth through the series. (6)Lum's keeping inside herself all the sorrow of the Ataru's negligence towards her

About the only time I've ever seen characters looking the same is when someone intended to do that as a team look. Oh, the CG Trailer they have on the site below is not taken from the game graphics.... Yep, Takahashi's tendency for puns and bad jokes is part of what made her stuff the best anime out there in my opinion. It was great reading the text to "In the End", and it definitely has elements of Lum and Ataru's relationship all through it as you noted.. nice job! Well, I figured that since UY always used Japanese trends and fads in it's storytelling, Karaoke had to fit in there somewhere... and the most appropriate time to use it seemed to be the Wedding of the Century!
