I could see Ataru having a career very similar to that of Bill Bradley, the long-time New Jersey senator.

That is, he makes his name as a big time sports star, probably in baseball, which is big in Japan. After he retires, he follows an issue closely and eventually runs for the Diet (Japan's version of Congress), using his fame as a reminder of his accomplishments as a young man. Once elected he proves himself to be quite knowledgeable and stays in the legislative branch for a long time, eventually coming to a dignified retirement.

This, however, is based on the assumption that Ataru takes advantage of his athletic prowess and marries Lum, never to cheat on her after the wedding.

Ataru seems to be very liberal, though, something that may not sit well with the voters, nor will his promiscuity in high school, especially if he runs against Mendo. Now THAT will be a fun election.
