Fluffy White Dog Posts: 991 May 26 12 10:51 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None I used to not see the point in trophies and achievements in games. like the little pokemon certificate, it would have been nice to see it, but not hunting down people with rare pokemon and checking your pokedex every five seconds for what was missing. that is... until i saw yoiko's trophy list... and felt completely jealous. i mean you did have a head start and all, but out of no where i felt the need to map out every place in Fallout 3, or get the all chaos emeralds in sonic 4. now that iv settled down a bit, iv gotta wonder if trophy's bring out the best or worst in us. what do you guys think?

I (and Yoiko and I share the RumicWorld account on PSN, so some of those platinum trophies are mine, but most are his) really informs what games I play and what games I wanna do well at. For example, I want people who look at our profile who have never heard of our site to KNOW we're anime/manga fans, and I can do that by playing games like Naruto, Fist of the North Star, or in Yoiko's case, Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. And I wanna do well in those games to show that I'm a fan of them. Some games, like Street Fighter 4, which I love, is just too insanely hard to do as well as I'd like, but I think a trophy list is a good example of what someone's like as a gamer....haha, as long as they don't start playing a lot of Disney and Lego games just to up their trophy count. ^_^ Great discussion! Pros: -Improve Customer loyalty to a specific format -Increase player investment -Increase longevity in current games -Show's players skills and experience Cons: -Some break the flow of the game -No way to opt out -Affect how we play the game -No real benefit beyond respect So as you can see, the real winner is the actual game developers, not the players. While I understand that aiming for achievements can be fun and awarding, some games require you to jump through some RIDICULOUS hoops to get there, which can be quite insulting. An example of this would be one achievement in Garry's Mod which requires the player to have 1 year's playtime total. (Aka 365 days, or 8760 hours) I mean, seriously? And as you state, ac_tactics, there's very little point in actually doing the achievements as there is rarely a reward. Some games will now unlock costumes, but before you usually got nothing but points. It turns our gaming down to "Who has the biggest number". Some people have taken it to the absolute extreme, importing foreign consoles just to replay their games again and get more achievements. There's a vast community for it online, but I can't help think it's a bit... wasteful. It's extrinsically motivating players to go through games, while really games should be all self-motivated and enjoying the experience. So yeah. I understand competitiveness between friends, and the odd achievement can be nice. However I feel if you start playing the game FOR the achievements, something's not right. The fact that Achievements are pretty much everywhere now (Steam, PSN, Xbla, Apple game centre, websites, built-into games, etc) shows that they're not going away. (I say most of this related to Xbox 360, as I don't own a PS3. I also did an taxonomy of achievement types, if you're interested! :P)

Talking Mailbox Posts: 2039 Jul 25 12 10:52 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I really like trophies, but then my trophy count kind of indicates that: Yoiko/Yusaku play less games than I do but they tend to be more focused on what they play. So although they have fewer overall games in their list than me, the ones they do have are more likely to have the platinum. My game list is probably twice the length of theirs but they only have a couple fewer platinums. I also almost always get the DLC (downloadable content, ie expansion packs) for any game I play, but they usually don't. For example, they've got the platinum in Little Big Planet 1, Fallout 3, and Red Dead Redemption but don't have any of the DLC for those three games. I've got 100% in LBP1, 100% in Red Dead Redemption, and will have 100% in Fallout 3 when I finally get around to purchasing the last two DLC packs. I don't play games just for the trophies, but their "Gotta catch 'em all!" aspect works on me :P

Fluffy White Dog Posts: 991 Jul 26 12 12:42 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	there is a limit to gotta catch them all, I'm sure a lot of us wouldn't play ea fitness games just to get trophies, i would know. i did one for my personal benefit, and i would still be doing it if I didn't break the sensors. but i would not burn 1mill calories just to platinum the game.

The fact that a trophy exists doesn't in and of itself entice me to play a game or perform a certain task in a game. My comment about "Gotta catch 'em all" was made assuming that we're talking about a game I like. If I don't like the game then it doesn't matter if it has the easiest trophies in the world; I'm simply not going to play it. Yes, I'm looking at you, Terminator Salvation. On the flip side, if I really like a game then it doesn't matter how much time I'd have to sink into it to get the platinum. If I enjoy the game, then I'll keep playing it. I've been playing a ton of Star Ocean The Last Hope lately, and have probably clocked 270 hours in the game so far (I finished the story back in February but there's a lot of post-game content). I really enjoy the game, so have no problem playing it for hours on end to get battle trophies for all nine characters. Trophies aren't the end all/be all for me. My favorite game on the PS3 so far has been a game that doesn't have trophies - Valkyria Chronicles. I've played the main game all the way through three times, along with all DLC. Ratchet and Clank Tools of Destruction is up there as well, along with Eternal Sonata. Those games don't have trophies either. Although R&C has in-game skill points to acquire, and I did get all of them :P

It had nothing but gold trophies and was supposed to be an easy platinum. We rented it and it was the most broken, glitched and tedious piece of crap I have ever played. I felt like I sold out. I still want to play it, but somehow not being able to prove I've played it hampers me now. Strange how that has affected my gaming tastes, right? It's not enough to enjoy the game, but if I really love it, I feel like I have to prove how much by getting the platinum. Metal Gear Solid 4 was a game Dylan and I love that lacked trophies. Oddly enough, Dylan bought the new HD releases of the old games (which he played and played back when they came out) but hasn't touched it yet because the trophies are such a time sink and he doesn't want to get into it and leave it without 100%. Like I said, it's sort of a shame how trophies encourage/discourage you from playing things. And it's interesting that Alindawyl mentions downloadable content. Normally I really hate DLC. I think it's a rip off and a way to sucker more money our of us, so I rarely get it, even for that 100% that I crave. I'm trying to remember the last DLC I got that I felt was really worth it... maybe the new stages in Metal Gear Online and that would have been... three or four years ago now. Valkyria Chronicles is AWESOME! An epic story, wonderful characters, a unique tactical system, a very unique art style, and great music all combine to make an epic game of epicness. Don't let the lack of trophies deter you. Would you let the lack of trophies prevent you from picking up Metal Gear Solid 4? Would you let the lack of trophies prevent you from playing the first Assassin's Creed? Of course not! Do it. Do it NOW. As to DLC, I don't care about whether or not it has trophies. All I care about is if I want to play it. If I cared enough to buy the game, there's a good chance I'll buy the DLC as well. There are some exceptions, such as purely multiplayer map packs for games I don't play multiplayer, or alternate colors for characters in Street Fighter. But the DLC for games like Red Dead Redemption, Borderlands, and Dragon Age all very much interested me and I really enjoyed playing them. The co-op DLC pack for RDR was free, and had trophies, AND is a blast to play :P

I gotta digress a little, what about trophies you can semi hold. like in mmo's when you defeat some huge boss you either get a title or some kind of bad ass weapon, that your character can hold and use in badassery. its probably the main motivation for people to grind and waste time leveling up rather than playing the game. i mean, this is my trophy set from guild wars yeah its a list of all the achievements i made an what rewards ill get for transferring to guild wars 2. the day after this app came online guilds all over were advertizing "join us and complete your hall of monuments awards." "we help you get your titles" people who never played the game before came out of the wood work so they could get a bonus in the next generation game. the influx of people was great at first but then it just got annoying, "im here to kill x amount of rats for my rat slayer title" "im here to get my loitering title" and so on. anyways all this post was just so that you look at my achievement list.

Apparently Kojima gave an interview last month in which he said MGS4 would be patched to support trophies to coincide with the 25th anniversary of MGS this year. Today, Kojima posted on Twitter that it's going live on 6 August and Yoshikazu Matsuhana from Kojima Productions made the announcement on the Playstation Blog. So it's now official: http://blog.us.playstatio...4-ps3-trophies-revealed/ The listed trophies don't add up to enough points for a retail game, so there will apparently be several hidden trophies. I would assume at least some of the hidden trophies will be the usual story-related trophies for defeating bosses or completing chapters. Note, however, this trophy: Sounds of the Battlefield Obtained all iPod® tracks (excluding tracks obtained via password) Yeah, the plat on this will take just a teeny tiny bit of time and skill since one of the tracks requires you to get all 40 emblems :P
